“Exceeded expectations!”
Reviewed May 25, 2012

A friend and I went to dinner here and I was highly impressed. The waitress was friendly and helped us with the menu choices. She even showed us how to eat the appetizer findik lahmajoun (flat bread topped with ground lamb and chopped veggies) - you sprinkle it with lemon juice, add tomatoes and lettuce, and roll it up. It was delicious! For the main course we got the two-person Istanbul combination which has different kababs and gyro meat. It was very tasty and more than enough for two people. For dessert we shared the kazandibi (similar to flan) and the fistikli kadayif (shredded phyllo dough with pistachios) and loved both of them. I would definitely love to go back to this restaurant.

“Good Turkish local restaurant”
Reviewed April 18, 2012

This is our second visit to Istanbul within the last six months or so. The food is very good, the prices are more than affordable, if not attractively low. Plus, not the least important factor is that unlike Indian, Chinese, Japanese, or even Mid-Eastern restaurants that abound and are plenty in the Greater Princeton and vicinity, Istanbul is almost the only Turkish restaurant in the Mercer/Middlesex area (unless one counts Trenton Kebab House).
The service is good and friendly; the restaurant is also a BYOB which makes it even more financially attractive and budget-friendly. The variety is not to be overlooked; Istanbul boasts of a much more diverse menu than your average local strip-mall ethnic restaurant.
For starters their olives and bread were quite good. We ordered the Gavurdagi Salatasi (tomatoes, cucumbers, onion, parsley and walnuts, served with pomegranate sauce), and the large version of it for $10.95. The salad was OK but rather bland. The next dish we had was the large version of Mixed Appetizers for $19.95 (includes: Humus, lebni, ezme, eggplant sause, tabule, babagannush), and it turned out to be very decent. We also had an additional hot appetizer Arnavut Cigeri (Sauteed beef liver with onions) for $5.95, and we can honestly recommend it; the portion was more than generous, and the dish was skilfully and tastefully prepared. For our main course we had Istanbul Combination for two people for $25.95 (which included:Lamp shish kabab,Adana kabab, kofte kabab, chicken kabab, and Gyro) and it was a real paradise for meat lovers, almost every part of it was delicious, prepared right, good variety, plus a mouth-watering tangy white sauce to go with.
With a bottle of a sparkling water, two real Turkish coffees (prepared in hot sand), and two desserts (we both had Baklava with Walnuts, unusually light, not greasy and not your typical Baklava-heavy), our bill came up to $88 after taxes.
The only reason we could not award Istanbul 4 stars is the unpleasant episode when they refused to honor our restaurant.com voucher, claiming it was used already (though it was not, and restaurant.com reimbursed us fully for the cost of the voucher). Having said that, we are certain that it was just an annoying glitch which, hopefully, would be fixed by the restaurant's management in the near future. We will definitely visit Istanbul again and would like to highly recommend it to all fans of Turkish cuisine.

“good food, good service.”
Reviewed December 27, 2011

we arrived at about 5pm and the place was empty except for someone waiting for takeout. this is not a good sign so i didn't hold out much hope. well, i was pleasantly surprised. we ordered the kibbe appetizer which was wonderful, paired with a cold yogurt appetizer, also very good. the two of us split a combination plate of varied meats on skewers served with rice pilaf. the meats were very tasty, the rice was average. the pide bread served on the side was great, i believe they bake it on premises. for desert we ordered kizandebi, baked milk pudding. loved it. the turkish tea was very good. overall, i would recommend this place. it's not the best i've ever had but it's local and good. so if you're in the mood to try some turkish food go for it!
