Hilton Newark Penn Station
Ranked #2 of 16 Hotels in Newark
Reviewed May 27, 2014

Our stay at the Hilton wasn't bad. The valet staff was excellent and tried to assist us as much as possible. The front desk staff was very pleasant as well. They did make the hotel very secure by using your key card to access any floor in the hotel. So if you didn't have a card, the elevator would not move. The food was okay. I didn't like the fact that the hotel was a Hilton and did not have a pool. This would have been excellent for children. Otherwise, they are thoroughly bored during down time.

Room Tip: The air conditioner/heat didn't always work and this hotel did not have a pool.

We used this hotel to visit Manhattan. It is connected with the NJ Penn Station via a covered walkway where you can catch a train that takes you directly to New York Penn Station. The staff was very nice and helpful and the hotel was safe and very secure. The room was clean but a little worn. We saved a lot of money staying here for 4 nights ($139/nt) as opposed to a Manhattan hotel with run $350/nt and up.

The train cost $10 per day for a round trip to Manhattan where you can hop on the New York subway system. The train to NY Penn Station leaves on track one. To return to the hotel, take the NJ Transit Trenton-SEC train. You have to wait and watch the monitors in the NY Penn station (they announce the track number about 15 minutes before departure. Be there right before the track is announced so you can get a seat. It is about a 20 minute ride.

The Hilton Hotel in Newark is a nice convenient place, but the food is not up to par, they switched items on menu without informing consumers. I would have been in trouble if I had a food allergy possibly, nor is the assistant food and beverage manager on duty the night I stayed here in the Presidential Suite. All the other staff especially the front desk was extremely nice.

I have been coming to this hotel quite frequently recently since I have business in Newark. It is a comfortable and well managed facility with good staff and good facilities. It is very close to a cluster of shops and affordable restaurants, and it is very convenient to the Newark Penn Station and the Newark Light Rail. The hotel is a bit overpriced but represents a reasonable place to stay if you have work to do in Newark and need good access to public transportation. There is a convenient (though again, somewhat expensive, $21/day for hotel guests) parking lot nearby if you bring your car along.

This was a generally good experience. The staff was efficient, and attentive. It helps that it is in Gateway Center, so there are a few places to get the basics for your trip. The print-center is within the building premises, and you are a short walk away to the trains for New York's Penn Station as well. It is a very convenient place to be, if you are in a hurry to get things done or cramming your day with activities. I wouldn't recommend it to the most leisure oriented travelers.

This hotel was a great place to stay for just a night and would have stayed longer. All the staff were friendly and attentive the only thing that let it down was being in Newark away from any shops but still a great place.

Stayed only because NYC hotels jacked up rates to 2x the usual rate this week. There is nothing nearby to walk to for food with the exception of a Spanish restaurant that is over-rated - family style tho' and you get quantity, not so much quality. So, have dinner in the city, catch the NJT to Newark and and just use the room to sleep only. There is no fridge, and you have to pay for internet access. You can do better at the next train stop west.
