“Clean and Good Location”
Reviewed January 2, 2014

I have been to the Hilton hotels many times. This one was up to par and conveniently located near the train station. It was an easy commute into NYC. We arrived before check in time and they were able to let us in the room.

There is a charge for overnight parking, but we were able to stay into the next day around 1pm without any additional charges.

The front desk staff needs a little help with customer service, but overall they were friendly. Before we left for the train station, we had a question and the front desk was busy. We saw someone walking around and helping people in the lobby, so we asked him. He turned out to be the hotel manager. He was VERY helpful and friendly. That is customer service -- a manager who helps where needed, no matter what.

Room Tip: I couldn't say what type of rooms are better, this was my first time there. We weren't in t...

We stayed here in lieu of staying in Manhattan to see "Pippin." This hotel was less than 1/2 the price of comparable hotels around Times Square and only a 15-20 minute train ride to Penn Station, NYC, with the last train leaving NY at 1:22...
Connected to the train station by a well-lit walkway tunnel, we'll be staying here again. Everyone at the front desk and in the lobby treated us like royalty.
Comfortable, clean rooms at a great price...connected bar...coffee shops outside the door in the "Gateway" section.
A fine!

We recently stayed at the Hilton Newark Penn Station for the second time, and it was every bit as pleasant as the first time this past April. Our daughter lives in the Ironbound section of Newark, an easy fifteen minute walk from the hotel. This is an absolutely first class hotel and the obvious choice if you have business or pleasure planned in Newark. There are many really nice restaurants within walking distance. My wife and I walked back from our daughter's apartment at night several times and no one bothered us. It may not be the Upper West Side, but the area seems safe to us. There is a walkway to Newark Penn Station (formerly part of the great Pennsylvania Railroad) where one may take the PATH train into Manhattan (for $5 round trip per person), catch Amtrak or a bus, or take New Jersey Transit trains to other destinations in New Jersey. The hotel offers a free shuttle to and from Newark Liberty International Airport, which is just as convenient as JFK or LaGuardia. Finally, there is an Enterprise car rental office right at the hotel (we had to rent a car one day, and the Enterprise staff was most accommodating). All in all, a very convenient location.

The rest of my comments apply to Executive Level rooms on the ninth and tenth floors because that is where we stayed both times. The advantage of paying extra for Executive Level is the free breakfast. The breakfast in the Concierge Lounge is outstanding and right there on the ninth floor, so we appreciate the convenience. The breakfast is not just a Danish and coffee, but offers a fresh fruit bowl, hot oatmeal, cold cereal, toast, some of the tastiest muffins I've ever had, bagels, yogurt, various fruit juices, and of course high quality tea and coffee. An excellent breakfast.

Our room was spacious with a traditional, elegant decor. The room was very clean and well-maintained. The king-size bed had pillows (feather?) that weren't too large and a down comforter. The bed seemed very comfortable to both of us; we slept well. The heating system was very quiet. There was some street noise at times (this is in a large city, after all), but nothing that kept us from sleeping. The bathroom is intelligently designed, with side lighting for the mirror (as opposed to top lighting found almost every other place we have ever stayed, which gives harsh shadows), a close-up mirror for putting on makeup, and easy-to-understand shower controls. However, the toilet is low, not one of the higher ADA models. That wasn't a problem for us but it might be for older people or anyone with knee problems.

In addition to the large wide-screen TV and alarm clock, there were a hair dryer and iron/ironing board in the room; you don't have to ask for them. There was no refrigerator, something my wife missed.

There is a computer room in the lobby available only to guests that we found very useful for printing out boarding passes. Both a Mac and a Windows machine are provided.

Finally, the unusually friendly, helpful, and accommodating staff deserve special mention. Normal check-in time is 3 p.m., but we arrived at 9:30 in the morning and Juliana at the front desk cheerfully found us an available room and let us check in right then. Roxanna, in the concierge lounge, told us about the free airport shuttle in April (how did we miss that?) and one morning while we were eating breakfast this last trip, I listened to her patiently give a guest directions to the 9/11 memorial in Manhattan. She is a real asset to the Hilton. And we enjoyed talking to Alvin, who drove us from and to Newark Airport; a calm, professional driver and a gentleman. (I apologize if I have misspelled any names.)

The Hilton Newark Penn Station is a fine place to stay. My wife and I recommend it enthusiastically!

Room Tip: If breakfast is important to you, pay a little extra for the convenient and excellent breakfast prov...

Stayed at the Hilton Penn Station during one of the many snowstorms this season. Excellent from the moment the van driver picked us up from EWR to the time I went back to the airport. I stayed on the concierge level. A little less food than some concierge level hotels, but I still enjoyed the service and the presentation.

Connected via indoor bridges to Newark Penn Station, the PATH train is a bargain at $2.50 to NYC and just 22 to 27 min away. Not much else to see or do around the hotel in Newark. There is a small group of shops within the pedestrian mall area of the hotel walkways.

This hotel is in desparate need of room upgrades. The front desk staff is nasty. I paid top dollar on a business trip for this hotel and the front desk acts like you are trying to steel something from them when you ask for an upgrade based on Hilton Honors status. So unless you are a Hilton Honors Platinum Member -- don't stay here!!!! Stay at the Marriott at the Airport!
