“Excellent”
Reviewed December 6, 2013

Went here on a Wed. night, so no wait even with no reservation. Was here several years ago and liked it. I still feel this is an excellent restaurant. I had very tasty grilled veal chops- 2 nice size chops, and interesting French cut potatoes, and nice veggies came with it! they include house soup which was very good. With bread and soup our group of 4 only ordered some Spanish sausage as an appetizer. My wife enjoyed the stuffed salmon, my son really liked the filet mignon and shrimp and his wife liked her chicken with lemon sauce. We didn't need dessert, so the bill was reasonable. Like many of the good restaurants in the 'ironbound' section, you really can count on a good meal for a fair price. The wait staff is very friendly and polite. I recommend giving it a try. Parking was no problem as we got a spot in the very small lot (they have someone there to help you), I know on the weekends parking is not great, but you will find a spot.

“Hidden in Newark NJ”
Reviewed December 3, 2013

On a one way back street of Newark NJ and away fron the "Famious" Portugese/ Spanish restaurents you will fine maybe the best one. Food was better the those others and just as pleantiful if not more. Enough in fact for dinner the next day also. Looked at what near by tables had and all looked and smelled great. Small dinning room with lots of good conversations going on so a bit on the loud side but that was fine. Service was excellent. Will definally be going back.

“CASA VASCA TRUE SPANISH FOOD”
Reviewed November 30, 2013

We have been coming to Casa Vasca for over 30 years. The food is always fresh and delicious, and the quantity is always VERY GENEROUS.... the staff is friendly and offers great service. This is a true Spanish Restaurant...they offer a great selection with many specials of the day. The restaurant also offers the ambiance of a Spanish décor and is extremely clean. If you want true authentic Spanish food this is NUMBER 1 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

“Classic Spanish / Basque Food”
Reviewed November 19, 2013

Casa Vasca has been hidden on a back street in Newark’s Ironbound section for as long as I can remember, and it has a well-earned reputation for serving up hearty Spanish / Basque food at fair prices.

The dining room is hidden behind the bar area, and you have to walk through the bar to get to the restaurant area – although there are a few tables in the bar area if that is to your liking. The tables tend to be packed in tightly, but that is part of Casa Vasca’s charm. The waiters are friendly and efficient, the portions are generous, and our party of 4 took home several containers of leftovers for lunch the next day.

The soup of the day was black bean, and it was very good. The paella and lobster were also good.

When we were there at 4 PM on a weekday there was no wait, and the room wasn’t crowded; but I know from experience that it can become a madhouse if you go there on a Saturday night or at some other typically busy time. They take reservations, and I would consider that a necessity at high-volume times.

They have a free, private parking lot a few doors away from the restaurant, which is a big plus for them because parking in this neighborhood ranges from difficult to impossible.

One last word: I noticed that a few reviewers have referred to Casa Vasca as a Portuguese restaurant. I don’t know where those folks ate, but it wasn’t here. Casa Vasca is a Spanish restaurant that specializes in the cuisine of the Basque region. If you are looking for Portuguese food, there are dozens – maybe hundreds – of Portuguese places in the Ironbound section of Newark. If you are looking for something different (Spanish / Basque), then try Casa Vasca.

“Bland food, but lots of it”
Reviewed August 27, 2013

Dinner was average, at best. It took half an hour for the entrees to arrive, and when they did it was hardly worth the wait. There was plentiful seafood in the mariscada verde, but it was flavorless and there wasn't much green in the green sauce. With rice, fried potatoes, and dinner rolls accompanying the meal it was an overabundance of carbohydrates, and no fresh veggies, even though it's summer and they're growing all around.
On a positive note, the wine was only $6 per glass, and was decent, and the bean soup before the meal was very good, and gratis.
