“Delicious Portuguese food!”
Reviewed April 28, 2014

We were only in the Newark area for one evening but wanted to make the most of it. We read the reviews of Portugalia and decided to try it. We were glad we did! The bar side seems very much like your local neighborhood meeting spot and the restaurant side feels very much like you're dining in someone's home - there's even a TV in the corner set to the Portuguese channel. For two of us, we ordered a salad, paella, and their salted cod fish entree - all to share. We were some of the first diners that evening so we didn't see portion sizes before ordering. Oh my goodness, we had enough food for a family of six easily. The food was beautifully presented and so fresh, everything was delicious. Our waiter was very friendly and very attentive. We tried our best to finish what we could but there was just no way. Our waiter seemed to think we didn't have enough food and couldn't understand why we weren't finishing it all. If you go, go HUNGRY. You won't be disappointed!

“Simply the best”
Reviewed September 18, 2013

One of the best restaurants in all of NJ. The food is always cooked to perfection. The BBQ chicken is hands down the best around (comes with rice and fries of course). Garlic shrimp, Portuguese sausage, steak sandwich. The service is good but a little quirky because they don't speak good English. Anyway that is all just part of the atmosphere that ads up to a great night out. Top Red sangria in Newark or try a Sangres beer.

“Great service, great food,”
Reviewed March 24, 2013

Went there on sat night, we were late with our reservation and had an extra person, but they accommodated us without missing a beat. Paul, our waiter, was engaging and very friendly, treating us like we were regulars. His suggestions on family style dining and alternative dishes was excellent. My roast suckling pig was perfectly done with the skin crisp and crackling, my wife's seafood with salsa verde, my sister's cod and a friend's halibut steak were all delicious. And let's not forget the white and red sangria. Both tart and refreshing, a wonderful accompaniment to the meal.
We will be back.

“Casual Authentic Portuguese”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

This is a smaller Portuguese restaurant on Ferry Street in Newark. If you are looking for a smaller more casual place to get a great authentic Portuguese meal, this is the place for you. It is not touristy like some of the others "Down Neck" Ironbound...it seems to be more of a "local" hangout. Patrons enjoying "Futbol" (or soccer to the American fans) on one of several TV's in the dining area. Waiter was polite and attentive, food was fantastic, Sangria and Espresso, fabulous.

Reviewed October 7, 2012

We go there often and the food is amazing... the best we ever had outside of Portugal. The BBQ Chicken is out of this world and everything is fresh and tasteful. Service is friendly and efficient.
If your in Newark and like Portuguese/Spanish food don't miss this place.
