The neighborhood is a bit sketchy, especially at night when I was there, but the food was good. Cost conscious patrons beware. 2 soups and 2 sandwiches were $40 before tip, but everyone was friendly. The only downside was this place is around the corner from the Prudential Center where the New Jersey Devils play and we caught it on the night of a home game. Being a Philadelphia Flyers fan, it was to stomach all the patrons wearing Devils garb.

Went here the day after a Devils game, so its close by the Prudential Stadium. Had the Chicken homemade soup which was great, though the Matzo balls are large so you may want to share. For sandwiches had both the pastrami and the brisket, both were very good though the meat was less fatty vs the likes of Katz's which may or may not be a good thing.

What a great restaurant - had the Pastrami sandwich - was super yum the meat - ask for the bread to be toasted to make it even yummier. the chicken soup with the ball was AMAZING. Highly recommended. Thanks tripadvisor folks - was staying at the Newark Marriott Downtown - great choice of hotel nearby on cheap NYC stay! Price was a little bit dear for Newark, but the food was superb.

After leaving Joe's crab shack where we were left without food for 20 minutes I looked on trip advisor for a nearby restaurant. Hobby's came up as number one out of 446 restaurants in Newark with good reason. The food was excellent! The service match the quality of the food! Superb onion rings (and to many of them) went well with one of the best bowls of matzoh ball soup I've ever eaten in my life. My friend said that his split pea soup was superb as well. He described his pastrami sandwich has thick and tasty. My ham and turkey sandwich was off the hook good. If you're in downtown Newark and need a great meal come to Hobby's!

We went to the Rod Stewart concert. We had originally planned on going to Brick City across from the arena, but when we got there at 5:45 (we had called and they didn't take reservations, but said this would be a good time for an 8:00 show) there were no tables available and the wait time was estimated at an hour and a half. I had seen an advertisement in The Star Ledger for Hobby's and remembered that tripadvisor had rated them the #1 restaurant in Newark, we gave
them a call, and they said there was no WAIT and gave me easy directions to the restaurant. It was a short walk from the arena, but once we arrived (we were greeted at the door by the owner), we were seated, well fed at a reasonable price and catered too by the server and owners. The pastrami was delicious, and they serve Dr. Brown soda, pickles and sour tomatoes.
The cupcakes looked excellent but we were stuffed. The owners said they stayed open tonight especially for this concert. I am glad they did. Would recommend highly if going to the arena.
