College students from Montclair State took a tour with Antonio this past Saturday. He was down to earth, funny, but most of all knew SO much about so many different aspects of Newark. He answered hard questions and easy questions like a pro. Because...he is a pro, he works in urban planning and knows all the cutting edge projects. All of us were delighted with an insider's look at Newark.

Walking around Newark NJ on a hot, humid July afternoon? Not everyone's idea of fun, but give it a try. Our jovial and informative guide, Antonio, (who gets my award for Best-Walking-Backwards-While-Talking Guide) not only told us about the (mostly) Portuguese food we were sampling but about the history of the Ironbound section of Newark and how its waves of immigrants have come, made a success of their lives, moved elsewhere and thus made space for the next wave; this has kept this section of town vibrant and ever-changing. Our food selections ran from wines to barbecue, ice cream, chocolates and Iberico pork products, so be sure to come hungry! If you've never thought of New Jersey's largest city as a destination, let Antonio and Emily change your mind. You won't be disappointed.

We took this tour on Mother's Day and it was very enjoyable despite an unceasing torrential downpour. We sampled delicious food including at a very crowded Brazilian steakhouse, an incredible Portuguese ham shop, an old Italian ice cream shop featured on the Sopranos, a new Brazilian chocolate shop and a Portuguese bakery with amazing cappucinos. Our tour guides, Emily and Antonio, were energetic and excited about their work and their company.

We went on a food tour of the Ironbound with Antonio and Emily on a rainy Sunday and it was so much fun! We got to try a significant amount of food at a variety of Spanish, Portuguese and Italian restaurants, bakeries and cafes. Despite the rainy weather, the whole group was in good spirits and the tour covered a good mix of historical information about the area in between food stops. The ticket price was also incredibly reasonable. We'll be back for another tour and to the Ironbound - thank you!

Have had the opportunity to complete several of the walking tours with Emily and Antonio, and couldn't have been more pleased. As relatively new transplants to Newark, the tours are a great way to get to know the history of the city and its people, as well as get an insider's view of what's happening today. If you're looking for a family friendly way to get a few steps in, and learn a little something along the way, check out any one of their many offerings. . .you WILL NOT be disappointed - rain or shine.
