“Had to call Horward Johnson Corporate to have resolution. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE!”
Reviewed February 15, 2010

Horrible experience.

BE WARNED! The Management and staff are unprofessional, clueless and extremely rude. The hotel itself is smelly, loud and un-kept. I booked this reservation through hotel.com. Through a computer glitch (an automatic default to a two night stay rather than the requested one night stay), I was charged for two nights instead of one. This error was immediately noticed and hotel.com was notified. All they needed was the approval of the hotel to reverse and refund this error. Instead, the reservation clerk (Patrick) insisted that there would be no refund as per the ‘small print’ of a charge of one night for any changes to the reservation. The Manager (Mel Desei) was not available and I insisted that he be called. The Manager denied the refund request. The clerk insisted that the Manager would be available to speak with the next day. The next morning, after my one night stay and prior to check out on February 15th, the issue was again addressed and rudely denied. The Manager was still not available in person. I had to get on the phone with Howard Johnson Corporate offices, Customer Care Division right there in front of the hotel employee to get this resolved. Of course, under the circumstances and in the name of good customer service, they agreed that there would be a refund for the erroneous second night booking. It is hard to believe in this day and age, that this type of dysfunction and lack of customer service exist. The corporate offices of Howard Johnson should make immediate changes to their quality of representatives. Stay away!

I booked this hotel through an online discount website for around $40. I would not pay a cent more for this hotel. The furnishings are old and dingy, and there is a weird smell through the entire hotel, including my room. Rooms are damp smelling. Wireless internet is extremely unreliable and crashes every couple of minutes. Small, outdated, fuzzy televisions. Very loud since its so close to the airport. Very uncomfortable beds - can feel the springs in the mattress. Very loud heating and cooling units. I definitely WOULD NOT stay here ever, ever again.

Pros: Free shuttle to airport

the previous reviews were not exagerating. I got this room from hotwire for 48$ after tax. but they nickle and dime u for everything. parking is $15, that really ticked me off. then the hotel is under renovation and there are contruction materials evrywhere, unpainted walls etc. bed bugs DO exist here. dont waste your money..... what a nightmare :( would have been more comfortable sleeping in my car

Like the reviewer before me, I also discovered fresh bed bug bites each morning I stayed at this hotel in a 5 night stay. Bed bugs are fairly rampant in the New York area, so perhaps hotels can't be fully blamed for this, but there are things they can do to make it better, like:

(a) have a vacuum that is newer than 40 years old.
(b) wash their sheets in hot water and replace them regularly (these beds also have thos disgusting bed covers instead of duvets)
(c) offer to clean people's clothes when they discover bed bug infestation, instead of refusing to admit that there is an infestation and refuse to help them clean their clothes.
(d) don't treat your customers that you have infested like they are 2nd class citizens.
(e) replace mattress with blood stains and rips (where the bed bugs hide) -- see photos

The worst part was not so much getting the bed bugs, although this is an incredibly horrible and humiliating experience...not to mention costly to dry-clean all your clothes. But it was that they called me a liar when I showed them my bites and refused to help me in any way to clean my clothes.

The staff and manager were all rude, inconsiderate and the entire hotel and all the rooms smelled like chemicals. Worst food I ever had in their dingy cafe that arrived at my table cold. Also one morning this woman with lesions on her face got into the elevator with me and had blood stains on her housecoat. That's the type of clientele this crummy hotel attracts.

RUN FAR AWAY, go to the Sheritan, Holiday Inn, ANYWHERE at Newark Airport but this place. It's not worth it.

Oh yeah, and there was a fitness centre, but it was closed with the lights off almost the entire time and the internet access was so slow that I couldn't make skype calls.

Found bed bug bites all over me in the morning. Staff refused to believe they were due to bed bugs. No money refunded, no move to a different room, basically called us liars. Never again.

I thought I was the pickiest traveler around -- whoever is writing most of these reviews has me beat by a long shot. This hotel is just fine. If you want "Hilton" ammenities, then pay the price and stay at the Hilton. The hotel was older, smoking rooms did smell like smoke but that's why they're smoking rooms. Ours was clean, a/c worked fine, bathroom was clean and roomy. Spotless when we got there, obviously not as much attention to detail during our use of the room, but ammenities restocked, trash out, beds made and vacuumed. Staff was not overly friendly or outgoing but they were not rude. Some complain of airport noise, we never heard a thing on the first floor. I could see how it would be hard to find if you were driving, but we did not. Shuttle could have been a little speedier to and from the hotel, but no big deal and it was free. We feel we got our money's worth -- it was clean and comfortable. FYI to ones staying in Newark and traveling to Manhattan to sightsee --- free shuttle to airport, bus to Penn Station, PATH to Manhattan. It's takes a minute to figure out, but smooth after that and saves a lot of $$. Feel free to email me, I have all the bus/train numbers and ticket cost and info. Enjoy your trip. sonia_norman@hotmail.com
