“Very good food that's stood the test of time”

The Frog and the Peach has been one of the premier restaurants in New Brunswick for close to 30 years. The amazing thing is that they continue to innovate and serve wonderful food year after year. We went the other night for an 80th birthday party. We were seated in an alcove adjacent to the bar, but separate from the main dining room. The food as usual was very, very good. I had bone marrow served with sides of sea salt, a jam and a capered parsley. It was unique. I was then served an arctic char served in a lentil and eggplant broth; sublte, but scrumptuous. Others at my table had lamb neck -- a tender, well-seasoned cut that one rarely finds elsewhere. This had been just added a menu that undergoes change on a regular basis. My one frustration is that the service was spotty and the dishes took a very long time to come out despite that the fact that the restaurant was not very crowded on this summer weekend. I hate to think that the service was affected by the 20% gratuity that the restaurant automatically tacks on for parties of 6 or more. The meal took three hours and we had to ask for the check at that point.
I'll certainly be back for the food. However if a restaurant is going to tack on a gratuity of 20%, they'd best deliver top drawer service

“Perefct for a Relaxed, Quiet, Romantic afterwork rendezvous.”

The F&TP is a perfect little spot for any # of gatherings. The atmosphere is cozy, not snobbish at all, but you know you're in a classy place the moment you step inside. Greeted by an amazing hostess, who was extremely elegant and intuitive. A cool Tapas Garden awaits, along with a wine list like no other...going on and on won't do the place any justice. Its definitely a place that you can make a go to option when looking to impress.

“Rather disapponting”

We were honestly willing to rate The Frog and the Peach favorably, as a tribute to its founders - the pioneers of the fine dining in the Central New Jersey. We are not sure what accounts for the rather disappointing dining experience, whether it is the new ownership (but hardly so, for the current ownership is personified by the restaurant's longtime chef), emergence of numerous finer and better restaurants in the area or other factors, but nothing about our visit was inspiring, unusual, striking or memorable.
We liked the location though, quite close to the downtown New Brunswick but at the same time nicely secluded, cozily tucked in away from its more 'bustling' parts and paths. The valet service was quite a useful addition, though slightly overpriced ($9).
The day was pleasant, so we opted for the outside dining area which advantageously combined tented parts and open air. The service was professional but average, somewhat lacking in friendliness and personality.
The wine list didn't look too bad, the prices for decent Bordeaux and Bourgogne were slightly more affordable that in comparable restaurants. This was undoubtedly a plus.
Now, the main part is food. Unfortunately it is the case, incidentally quite common, when the menu looks and sounds so much better than its eventual taste and quality. For appetizers we ordered Crispy Calamari (Frisée, Jalapeño Jelly, Tomato Emulsion/$13) and it was just OK. Our other appetizer, Black Truffle Ricotta Gnocchi ($14) looked good but tasted mediocre. My main course was Bronzino ($30), artfully presented but, again, lacking in the taste buds department. My wife's Pan Roasted Griggstown Chicken Breast (Dirty Rice, Blue Moon Acres Radish and Avocado Salad, Mole/$27) was poorly cooked and plainly tasting. Overall, as noted above, one could observe the lately ubiquitous phenomenon of haute-cuisine wannabe restaurants: diverse ingredients, with a claim to exquisiteness, just don't add up and contribute nothing, there is no harmony between different parts of a dish, with a sole seeming intention to embellish an otherwise ordinary and not-so-greatly-tasting food.
The desserts were much better than the rest though. Our desserts were Honey Poached Fig Dacquoise (Lemon Mascarpone, Raspberry/$12) and it was simply very good. The three cheese selection ($16) was acceptable if overpriced.
With a bottle of a good Burgundy (Volnay ‘Santenots’ Premier Cru, Thierry et Pascal Matrot, 2007/$73), a bottle of sparkling water ($7), one cappuccino ($5) and one specialty coffee ($10) our bill came up to $205.96. In our opinion, based on the quality provided, it shouldn't have been higher than a hundred dollars. We honestly can't recommend this restaurant to any gourmet food lovers.

“Lots of money for OK food with an attitude”

Went with a group and the service was less than desired. They also got some orders wrong and then try to get a waiters attention. Unlikely to go back. Its way over-rated.

“Charming New Brunswick hideaway..”

During restaurant week, two girlfriends, my father who was visiting from out of town and I chose to dine at this restaurant and we were not disappointed. I was pleasantly surprised at what a gem of a restaurant was hidden away in the back of downtown New Brunswick. I stepped off the side walk of Dennis street and was whisked away to an upscale restaurant that could rival any NYC restaurant of the same caliber. The restaurant has a cozy bar and seating that one doesn't feel packed like sardines. The servers were suburb and knowledgeable about the menu. My father who is apprehensive about foods he is unfamiliar with cleaned his plate. I chose from the prefixe menu and had the black truffle ricotta gnocchi, halibut and sticky toffee pudding. The truffle was delicious. The halibut was dry but edible and the toffee pudding was OK. Everything was beautifully presented in small portions, of course. The other members in my party throughly enjoyed their meals which was the same except one person had coconut flan and she loved it. I tasted it but did not like it. My friends ended up eating the rest of my halibut and admitted that mine was much dryer than theirs. Although I didn't like my food that much, I enjoyed the atmosphere and charm and would definitely come again and try something else on the menu. It's great for an afterwork drink or romantic evening with that special someone.
