We met another couple here Saturday evening for dinner. The restaurant itself is on a corner location, pretty easy to get to and ample parking in the vicinity. It is well decorated, with a fairly open space and a few levels to dine on. The seating staff was quite lovely and seated us upon arrival with our reservations. Well, that was where the excitement ended. Our table of 4, had at one point 4 different waiters. Not one knew what the other was doing. From our glasses of sparkling Pellegrino water being filled with regular tap water, to the waiter dropping soda on my boyfriends shirt, our round of "soda's" being forgotten more than once and just overall lack of communication, we were fairly disappointed. We thought the food might then make up for it. Sadly, it didn't; less the eggplant rolattini which were fairly tasty and presented in a non-classic fashion, which we loved. My pear salad was awful as was my Pasta Rustica, served with sausage, peas and almost raw mushrooms in a light pink cream sauce. My boyfriend ordered gnocchi with marinara sauce which were less than ok. The other couple ordered mussels and pasta and clams with pasta and both were gritty in an overwhelming wine sauce. Maybe dessert would be better? It was better than appetizers and entree's that is for certain. The Ferrero Rocher gelato and the chocolate volcano cake were delish. However, one does not want to go out to an Italian restaurant simply to "like" dessert the best. We are no strangers to fabulous cuisine with a hefty price tag, which we are happy to pay when the service and food match the pricing. Acappello failed in both areas and the menu is astonishingly overpriced. The long and short of this experience, undertrained, inattentive, amateur service coupled with mediocre, poorly cooked dishes and NYC prices, equals a big "0". This BYOB location got lost in the early rave reviews of its opening and perhaps needs to revisit that. There are plenty of places in Montclair to enjoy a much better meal with a quarter of the price or at least better service. On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the best this establishment gets an 8 for ambiance, 4 for service and 6 for food.
