“"Underwhelmed"....”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 12, 2013

We met another couple here Saturday evening for dinner. The restaurant itself is on a corner location, pretty easy to get to and ample parking in the vicinity. It is well decorated, with a fairly open space and a few levels to dine on. The seating staff was quite lovely and seated us upon arrival with our reservations. Well, that was where the excitement ended. Our table of 4, had at one point 4 different waiters. Not one knew what the other was doing. From our glasses of sparkling Pellegrino water being filled with regular tap water, to the waiter dropping soda on my boyfriends shirt, our round of "soda's" being forgotten more than once and just overall lack of communication, we were fairly disappointed. We thought the food might then make up for it. Sadly, it didn't; less the eggplant rolattini which were fairly tasty and presented in a non-classic fashion, which we loved. My pear salad was awful as was my Pasta Rustica, served with sausage, peas and almost raw mushrooms in a light pink cream sauce. My boyfriend ordered gnocchi with marinara sauce which were less than ok. The other couple ordered mussels and pasta and clams with pasta and both were gritty in an overwhelming wine sauce. Maybe dessert would be better? It was better than appetizers and entree's that is for certain. The Ferrero Rocher gelato and the chocolate volcano cake were delish. However, one does not want to go out to an Italian restaurant simply to "like" dessert the best. We are no strangers to fabulous cuisine with a hefty price tag, which we are happy to pay when the service and food match the pricing. Acappello failed in both areas and the menu is astonishingly overpriced. The long and short of this experience, undertrained, inattentive, amateur service coupled with mediocre, poorly cooked dishes and NYC prices, equals a big "0". This BYOB location got lost in the early rave reviews of its opening and perhaps needs to revisit that. There are plenty of places in Montclair to enjoy a much better meal with a quarter of the price or at least better service. On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the best this establishment gets an 8 for ambiance, 4 for service and 6 for food.

“Had Engagement Party Here with 90 Guests !”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 14, 2013

Was having trouble finding a BYOB restaurant that could accommodate 90 people until I found Acappello. Had the party here because the owner was willing to open the place for us at noon on a Saturday for 4 hours. They customized a great menu for us and allowed us to supply the cake as well. They served our guests beer or wine which I supplied. The price per head was very reasonable and the food and service was fantastic. With a wedding coming up I choose a BYOB establishment to keep the price down and wanted a place with great food as well. Acappello fit the bill perfectly. Highly recommend !

“Took a chance, pleasantly suprised!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 2, 2013

Met another couple for dinner in downtown Monclair. My wife had seen Acappello on Restaurants.com but ended up not buying the certificate. The place was empty when we arrived at ~6:30 on a Saturday evening but seemed to fill up a little later. I got the impression that many of the other diners were regulars. We did not feel rushed by the service, in fact we had to call our waiter over twice when it was time to order. Our appetizers and meals were tasty. BYOB was appreciated. We were pleasantly surprised by the deserts, while a bit pricey they were delicious.

“Nice place, below average food”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 17, 2013 via mobile

All intentions of having a great meal- The place was aesthetically nice. Oddly there was an overkill of service. I'm not sure who our waiter was and while active, it was complete overkill. We didn't need someone pouring water every 30 seconds and literally 5 people checking on us.

The food was way over priced for the amount and quality. I had the most pathetic antipasto that was almost $17 and was on a tiny plate with about $5 worth of food. I was embarrassed for them. My pasta was good but for almost $20, it was a minuscule amount and average at best. My husband had a "stuffed" salmon that looked like it was made by an amateur and tasted about the same.
All in all- an epic fail. The BYO was the best and only good part!

“Another excellent meal at Acappello -- top notch all around”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 6, 2013

I returned to this place and had another excellent meal. From when we arrived to the moment we left -- everything was excellent. This is a BYO place in downtown Montclair -- and everything is done very well. Service was very good. The staff (not your wait-staff) that brings out the food could know a bit more about the dishes, where they are going, etc. -- but that's just a small misstep and doesn't take away from the experience or enjoyment of the meal.

The service however is overall very good. The wait-staff knows the specials, how they are made, details, etc. They know the menu well also. The restaurant has some excellent specials and everything we ordered was implemented very well. I very much like this restaurant and will no doubt return very soon. It's a gem in Montclair and should be rated much higher than it is.

Every dish we've had there -- excellent flavor, taste, implemented very well and all of it just adds to an excellent experience and night out.
