“Holy Pulled Pork!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 19, 2013

We had been waiting to try this BBQ place after a BBQ let down from a groupon deal had us thinking we might have to go down to Nashville to satisfy our cravings. Finally got here and the pulled pork was sooooooo good and soooooo moist and really did melt in your mouth! It didn't disappoint! The serving size of the pulled pork dinner was generous too. We felt the sides and dessert were all kind of basic but all okay tasting none-the-less. I expected the mac-n-cheese to be better, but the beans were good. The corn bread was tasty but it fell apart as soon as you touched it so it was very hard to eat! As far as service went, the girl behind the counter was very quiet, but she got our order right and got us on our way in a timely manner. I'd have expected bigger and better personalities in a mom-n-pop type BBQ Joint staff, but since my pork dinner rocked my night.....I'll end on a positive note. We decided we would go back and eat there again for sure. Thanks Wood Pit. Sorry Suzy :/

“Yes, YMMV, but usually outstanding”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 2, 2013

Once in a while, the ribs are dry here. And obviously that's a deal killer.

But we went yet again to The Wood Pit, and the experience was great. The ribs were moist, even though we did get some ends. They were smoked perfectly and the rub was heavy but not overly spiced, which we like. The mac n cheese was great, cheesy and NOT dry. The potato salad is very good.

I have to agree that I was not too impressed with the collard greens last time, so we did not try them this time. The baked beans were very good as usual - the sauce is very thick and syrupy, so if you don't like sweet backed beans, don't get them. The green beans were very good as well. The french fries were excellent this time, almost Belgian in that the outside was crispy but the middle was creamy almost.

We got the chopped pork too, and it was great. My daughter had the chopped chicken, it was great too and she's a picky eater. They have mild, medium, and hot BBQ sauces if you want. The meat is more than good enough and moist enough to eat without sauce.

They also have some fine desserts, for this meal they had red velvet cake, carrot cake, banana pudding, and peach cobbler. The only issue I had with them, other than YUMMY!!!, was that I didn't detect any Nilla wafers in the banana pudding, which is what I expect in a Southern style banana pudding. It seemed to be banana pudding with slices of banana but no cookies in it.

I can say that occasionally, maybe 10% of the time, we've gotten dry ribs here. But usually it is great. My spouse goes there with friends from work and also brings in colleagues from all parts of the US, including the South. They all really like The Wood Pit and the owner will make you some vinegar and mustard sauce if you ask nicely.

“Southern Disapproval”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 20, 2013

My boyfriend is from Texas and wanted a little taste of home. Several people had recommended this place and most of the reviews were outstanding so we decided to order for delivery (fuel charge or .99 and delivery charge of $5.50). We were both very disappointed. The ribs were super dry, collard greens were disgusting and tasted like they were marinated in a slop bucket, mac and cheese was dry and boring, the cole slaw tasted like it was right out of a mass produced generic container, and the red velvet cake (only dessert they had to offer) was dry. The brisket and potato salad were ok, but nothing to write home about. In the words of my southern boyfriend "if my momma was eating this she'd say, this is some nasty s***."

“Looking for good BBQ?”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 8, 2013

Located on border of Montclair and Bloomfield, small eatery - about 6 tables (with take-out), with minimal adornments in the restaurant, it really provides the real deal. While we were studying the menu, owner came over and gave us a few ribs to sample (on the house). We ordered the large pork ribs and large brisket plate (each came with two sides) for three people (all hungry) and it was more than sufficient. Each plate was about $22.00 which I found reasonable. Quantity of food was right and the quality was more than satisfactory. Three sauces available: mild, hot and really hot (which was not too hot) that gave extra tang to the meat.

You order at the counter, and pay at the counter. If you have a taste for barbecue, this is a place worth checking out. I suspect we will go back for the BBQ chicken. We did not try the desserts which were sitting in the fridge. Parking is on the street. We were worried as we arrived at 8:00 pm and the website said the place was supposed to close at 8:30 pm on Wedesday, but owner told us not to worry. We left at 9:00 pm after a leisure eat. Has a large screen TV for viewing.
Place was clean

“Can we be regulars?”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 17, 2013

We just finished dinner at The Wood Pit, and before we even left the place, my younger son asked, "Can we be regulars?" It was our first time there, and he wanted to make sure that we would return! This is a small store front place, run by really friendly people. Each person who worked there said hello to us and they checked in after we had a chance to try everything, to make sure that we loved it all. And we did! We ordered brisket (so tasty and tender), chopped pork (fantastic, smokey and moist) and pork ribs. We chose collard greens, baked beans (smokey and even a bit spicy), steak fries (they gave us a nice big helping) and cole slaw for our sides. The meal also came with four pieces of corn bread, which was served as an 8x8 inch square cut into 4 huge pieces. It was so much food that we ended up bringing home the whole order of ribs, because we just couldn't eat any more! The flavor of each of the meats was wonderful. Then there were two barbecue sauces that you could add; one mild, one spicy. We liked everything that we had, and we enjoyed the hospitality of the staff. For sure we will be back, and if my son has his way, we will be regulars there!
