Days Inn Monmouth Junction Princeton
Reviewed October 11, 2008

To get to this inn was an extreme headache! Bumper to bumper traffic. We got inside the lobby and experienced horrible customer service. Two women were chatting and never said hello until, I guess, they felt the need to get back to work and accommodate us. We asked for a first floor room (as there were three floors) and was told the only room they had available was in the third. Found it difficult to believe as there were only around six cars in their parking facility. Walked up the three flight of stairs, glad to have found the room so we could rest, and was TERRIBLY shocked to see the room given was not yet cleaned!

So, we had to walk three flights down again and ask for a new room. This time, she gave us a second floor room. I was too tired to ask why we didn't have that one earlier as we did ask for a lower level room. Walked up to second floor, still lugging our belongings, opened the door, and AGAIN, an uncleaned room. AMAZING.

See, that's not where the issue stops in this particular RED ROOF INN. The rooms smelled of rotten mildew, the bathroom towels unforgivably thin they had holes, rooms soo tiny you would wonder how the inn ever had any business.

I have stayed in so many hotels and motels, even the cheapest ones in the Bronx, NY. That having said, this Red Roof Inn North Princeton still tops as the WORST I've ever stayed at.

A difficult review to write as there are pluses and minuses. However, overall the pluses outweighed the minuses.

I've been coming to the area for a few years mainly to ride the roller coasters at Six Flags Great Adventure down the road in Jackson. I also like to be within wasy driving distance of Princeton where I love to eat at Penang restaurant which serves superb authentic Malaysian food.

There aren't many reasonably priced options in the area and I was pleasantly surprised to find the great prices offered for Red Roof Inn. With the reasonable price, I was able to upgrade myself into a king room with a fridge and microwave.

The Inn is easy to find just off US Highway 1. Morning and evening traffic can be a bit busy on the 1 but there are a lot of eating and food shopping options within easy driving reach. I also like to get to Quakerbridge Mall to shop and there are a few movie theatres all again within easy reach. Another tip is to drive and park at Princeton Junction train staion to have a day trip up to New York City. SFGA is about a 30-40 minute drive away.

The pluses are that the king room I had was spacious with a lovely comfortable bad and decent pillows. Everything looks newly decorated. The fridge and microwave were useful with the Stop and Shop supermarket just down the road at South Brunswick Square Mall. There's a lift to the second floor.

The unfortunate minus was a slight mildewy (?possibly smoky) smell especially in the bathroom despite the room definitely being non-smoking. Not enough to be terrible but needed the fan going all the time in the room to remove the odour.

In the end, I decided to score it in accordance with the fact that I would return here again.

After spending 3 nights at a Staybridge Suites I figured out since I needed to spend another 7 days in central NJ I need to be a little thrifty. I bit the bullet and made reservations online for the Red Roof in Monmouth Jct, NJ. Always check out the Red Hot Deals section - I got the Business King for $59.00 a day, which turns out to be 3 nights at the Red Roof equals one night at the Staybridge. Ok so its not a suite and no continental breakfast, but the room was clean, big enough, had a micro/fridge, cable tv and computer desk with a very comfortable desk chair. The bathroom was huge!

The room was very quiet, I didnt hear my neighbors next door or above me. I will suggest either the business king or 2 double bedded room - but the regular king room is small and all you get is a bed and that by itself fills the room.

There is nothing in walking distance to grab a bite to eat - so you must use the car. About 3/4 mile south is a Stop & Shop, Friendly's and a mexican restaurant. Northbound you will find a Burger King and McDonalds. The area is very busy during the morning and evening rush-hours.

Wireless internet is provided at an additional charge via T-Mobile. You can purchase the Internet connection card at the front desk for either $9.00 per day or $20 for 7 days. The motel is 3 stories with an elevator, pet friendly for no additional fee and plenty of grassy area. Free coffee is available 24/7 and a free USA Today during the week....what more do you need??

About what you'd expect for a motel. Rooms and bathrooms were generally clean, with a very slight mildewy smell, and we did find that our sheets were stained. Manager apologized for it when we informed him the next day at check out, and seemed surprised about it. It looked like there was something of a spit and polish renovation recently, and for the price, it felt just fine.

There generally aren't any less expensive options in the greater Princeton area, so if you're looking to be commutable to Princeton (maybe a 10 minute drive) and you're on the cheap, this might be your best bet. However, there's not much of anything in the immediate surrounding area, so just make sure you've got a car.

This motel was a good value along Route 1 and not far from Princeton University. It is easier to get to and from this Red Roof Inn, in terms of traffic flow, than to the Red Roof Inn that is closer to Princeton. The bedroom was a bit small, but the bathroom was nice and large. The ony ice machine we found was by the office a fair distance from our room on the 3rd floor. Delicious complimentary hot chocolate (and coffee) in the office day and night.
