Sheraton Mahwah Hotel
Ranked #8 of 8 Hotels in Mahwah
Reviewed August 12, 2013

While visually attractive from afar, this is a tired property. The rooms are small, with very little storage for your clothes, other than for things you can hang in a closet. Bathroom is small and very little counter space.
Staff almost non-existent.
Sound separation between the rooms pretty poor.

When arriving at the hotel, you had to find a dolly and carry your luggage to your room as there were no bell men. The clerk at the front desk was most unhelpful.
There is also a new gimmick for saving on overhead. it's called "a Green Choice" where you are offered a few points so they don' t have to make up your room or clean it until you check out. Next thing you know, they will be charging you an extra fee for cleaning the room.

We were there for a wedding and it is visually pretty. Modern styling. We came in at 12 midnight on the 26th and front desk was rude. Felt like I was bothering her. She was hidden in the back so you had to yell Hello to get her out. The rooms were nice. I jsut could not sleep due to the doors. They slam shut. We partied for the wedding till 3 am and were awoken by the people across the hall at 6 am getting ready for their morning wedding. Terrible planning. They did not care when I asked them to keep it down so I called front desk. Nothing done by them either. Also, I was just at the Hampton Inn the week before and had free wifi in my room. These folks charge you 11 bucks to have in your room and if it is anything like the free wifi in the bar/business area, it sucks.

I stayed at this hotel through Priceline and so got a bargain rate of $110/night. The hotel is in the middle of mountains with spectacular views. The Sheraton Mahwah is a favorite destination for weddings and other events for good reason. The place is in the mountains and looks like Emerald City as you approach. My room was spacious, with windows along an entire wall overlooking the Mountains. The elevator is glassed in and as you go up you can look out and see the landscape through the glass walls of the building. The room I had was large, clean, and well appointed, with a comfortable bed and a couch, etc.

The main disadvantage of this place is that they nickel and dime you to death. A mini fridge in the room cost you $20. Want a microwave? That will be another $20 please.

But here is the real kicker: you want internet? $25/day. No, your glasses are not dirty making you misread this text: $25/day. This is the most outrageous part of staying here. It basically ruins the hotel for the business traveler. They do have free wired and wireless internet downstairs. But still.

Given what they charge for rooms the management needs to get on the ball and offer free internet. Otherwise it is a great place for a wedding, but the business traveler would be better off looking elsewhere.

Room Tip: Get a room as high up as you can.

My recent 2 night stay at this hotel was fine. The grounds and setting and great, my room was clean and well appointed and the bed was very comfortable. One observation that could have been an issue was that the rooms did not seem to be well soundproofed. On this occasion there wasn't much late night "traffic" in the hallways or noise from other rooms, but what little there was could clearly be heard. Had the breakfast buffet and that too was nicely done. I was surprised and frustrated that there wasn't free Wi-Fi in the rooms. I travel mainly in Canada and have not had to pay for internet access for years. $12 per day for an essential service to the business traveler seems like an unnecessary cash grab.

While the hotel is clean, the management does not seem to be concerned about their guests good night sleep or safety. We experienced drunk people in our hallway laughing and screaming on the 20th floor while searching for their room and banging against all doors from 1am until 2:45am in 10 minute intervals. We were mortified and called the front desk. First call we placed briefly explaining, we were interrupted: "Yes mam, we take care of it" - and immediately hung up at. Next call 45minutes later we requested security - another "Yes mam, we know" - and nothing ever happened. In the morning we asked to speak to the manager - surprisingly he was not available and all attempts failed to speak to anybody in charge. We left our contact info and were promised a call by the manager. Again - nothing happened. Very disappointed about the poor personnel and customer care.

I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights and had a wonderful experience! The hotel is absolutely gorgeous both on the outside as well as the interior. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, which added to the atmosphere of the hotel. My room was perfect, with an incredibly soft bed (Sheraton hotels always have the most comfortable beds!). Complimentary breakfast and dinner is provided as well, how amazing is that? There's also a pool and a great exercise room filled with both weights and treadmills/elliptical machines. Oh and did I mention the parking was free as well? I would absolutely stay here again and encourage anyone in the area to do so as well, thank you for an amazing stay!

First view from afar, this Sheraton looks spectacular. However when you get up close there are little things that take away from that. The condition of the paving, the lack of help with baggage, the 'plain Jane' room appointments, the 'Spartan' club room. But for the $119 rate (special group rate) plus 15% taxes, I guess it was not bad.
The Memorial Day weekend we were there it was wedding central. Saturday hosted a large Indian wedding and was the over-nite for three other weddings including the one I attended. The next morning there was another Indian wedding ceremony right outside the entrance with the accompanying crowd.
We used the club for breakfast. The food was not very good. The croissants were store bought and tasted several days old. Same with the bagels. The egg McMuffin was OK. The coffee machine was the single brew type with the little portions. Although a good tasting half cup, the cue and wait was too long.
The Good:
Outstanding bedding.
Outstanding venue.
Spectacular view from club room (22nd floor).
Clean.
Grand-kids loved the pool.
Good value.
The Bad:
You can hear the guests talking in the next room.
Plain Jane room appointments.
They advertise 'Bliss' toiletries - there were none.
No hot water at 4:30 pm on Saturday.
Breakfast in club room eclipsed by Hampton Inn standard to all guests.
No baggage help solicitation.

I would have given 3.5 stars but not possible.

Room Tip: Club rooms have a great view.
