Sure Madison has it's good, fancy and fine dining ... but when you want a real burger ... made any way you want, or the House Special Burger ... this is the place.
From the minute you walk in, you know this is the place someone like Bruce Springsteen could write a song about. It's a local place, with friendly locals, and they all know each others names. After writing this .. I feel like going to get a beer and cheeseburger there now!

Let's be clear....Poor Herbies is not a gourmet restaurant. What it is all about is "comfort food" in a casual atmosphere. The restaurant is divided into two parts...on one side is the bar, the TV's featuring sports and a series if tables for four. On the other side is a quieter area where people desiring a nice meal tend to sit. Both sides feature the same menu.

Poor Herbies has excellent burgers as well as BLT's and other casual items. The house salad, which features creamy Italian, has been on the menu for years and is a crowd favorite. They do a excellent job with duck and have a daily menu of "specials".

The bar has a wide range of beers with a somewhat limited selection of wines. The restaurant is owned by Judy and Dennis Mullins and one of them is normally present throughout the day. They have owned this facility for about 20 years. It's the perfect spot to take that college student when the parents are visiting Madison. Its also an excellent "after work" spot.

Just had a terrific hamburger for lunch at Poor Herbie's. Cooked just the way I asked; medium rare, with perfectly grilled onions and really crisp bacon. Does it get better? Yes! Can't go to PH without having a salad mainly so that I can indulge in their house dressing. The best! My husband likes the salad topped with blue cheese, but I'm a purist. Wish I could tell you about a lot of their other dishes, but I love the steaks (the large club is delectable) and hamburgers so much, I don't get around to anything else. Oh....and the staff is always great. They add to the pleasure of the experience.

I love Poor Herbies as a local watering hole but took the family to dinner last week for a change and what a mistake. Nice owner, nice staff - terrible food. Only thing really edible is the burgers. Small kitchen so everything is slow - really slow, so keep the kids at home.

Went during lunchtime one afternoon and were seated in the corner squeezed next to a very large party, which I didn't understand since there were other table available a little farther away from them. But, we moved ourselved to another table, so no big deal really. The issue with that table was the overwhelming urine smell. Needless to say, I could not finish my burger because of the odor. We all had burgers and they were avarage, and the fries were OK. Usually we like the food and atmosphere here, but struck out altogether this time. Also, the place needs a good cleaning, The pictures are splattered with food and there is dust collecting on the countless knick knacks that fill the walls and ceilings. Might not bother other people, but just a pet peeve of mine.
