Food was excellent. Very good value for money. Atmosphere is pleasant, staff attentive, and offer suggestions. Good location not far from our hotel.

“One of the few in the area with alcohol”
Reviewed March 31, 2012

The food is always ok and I like being able to order a glass of wine with my dinner instead of a BYO all the time.

“Great food, serviced was rushed”
Reviewed February 23, 2012

Despite my comments below, the food was really, really good.

The staff made us feel like they wanted us to be done ASAP. It was Saturday night, so it was busy, but we are fast to order, etc., and it was uncomfortable to feel rushed and the waitress seemed uninterested. Got the salads before apps were done, dinner before salads were done, no attempts to refill our beers until we asked twice (we never got nor were we asked if we wanted water), and then they picked up the check off the table twice before I had put my credit card in it.

“Something Has Gone Terribly Wrong at 54 Main”
Reviewed February 19, 2012

We've dined at 54 Main at least a dozen times before last night, and have always had a decent, if not delicious meal. The place is typically a bit louder than we might like, especially in the bar area, but is always lively, and we've always walked away satisfied. Last night however, we had an experience that put us off so much that we're not likely to return.

We were greeted and told that there was a half-hour wait, which is typical for a weekend at dinner hour. We waited at a table in the bar and had some drinks. We asked for a glass for a bottle of beer we had ordered, but our waitress never returned with one. About thirty minutes later, one of the hostesses came around the bar three separate times asking if we were "Burke - Party of Four". We gave her our reservation name each time that she asked us if we were the Burke's, and we even made a joke to say "Are you sure it isn't "DANNY - Party of Four ?". The hostess apparently never took it in because fifteen minutes later, when I asked if we would be seated soon, they said that they couldn't find us when our table was ready. We were seated a few minutes later.

Our waitress was in a hurry right our of the gate. She was moving with an efficiency that was necessary to cover the many tables that she was assigned to. The restaurant was obviously understaffed, which left no room for polite or proper service. Menus were put into our hands, and the waitress vanished instantly. Our drinks hit the table with a "thunk", and again she was gone. No time to ask about the new menu items, or the availability of our old favorites - all of which had been removed from the smaller menu that we were holding. No bread was offered, and none appeared. The water that we requested had a bad taste to it, that we had never experienced there before.

We had been seated directly opposite the staff's station area, which would have been fine except that the cabinet doors that they used for storage slammed shut so loudly that it would make you jump each time. When it came time to order we asked our waitress about the menu change. She told us that they had a new chef and that the menu was going to change seasonally.

We had the Firecracker Calamari appetizer with a balsamic reduction and hot peppers that was tasty enough. For dinner one of us had the 54 Cowboy Burger (substituting grilled chicken for the burger), and another had the Grilled Chicken BLT, which they both enjoyed, though it did appear that the kitchen used frozen chicken rather than fresh. The fish and chips was tasty enough, but was obviously a frozen entree that was cooked in oil that wasn't up to temperature. The batter was a little wet with oil, and that left the texture lacking. THE BIG REUBONI, which is spelled out in capital letters on the menu was a capital mistake. The sandwich arrived with its contents spilling out of the side, and needed to be re-arranged before I could take a bite. And what a bite that was. The corned beef was sliced without the fat having been trimmed. My first bite was filled with fatty meat that seemed to have been heated on a grill with oil. I don't typically send food back if it's the least bit palatable, but this was a greasy mess and just wasn't edible.

The waitress took my sandwich, apologized, brought me a menu, and disappeared. A few minutes later she returned along with the manager. I ordered a bowl of chicken soup, since it would be quick - and hey, what can you do to a bowl of chicken soup? Poof, she vanished! The manager offered his apologies, and said that he would comp both the Rueben and the chicken soup. When we mentioned that we missed a lot of items on the old menu, he said "I hear you". I mentioned the cabinet doors to him and he made a note to put some rubber bumpers on them.

Almost ten minutes later, after everyone at the table had finished eating, my bowl of chicken soup appeared, and I found out just what you CAN do to chicken soup. The key word being "can". The soup was lifeless in taste and texture. The noodles were so limp that they were about to disintegrate, and the chicken was obviously baked, diced, and thrown in at the last second. If this soup didn't come out of a can, then it had been sitting around for days. Either way, it was sub-par.

It's not likely that we'll be back to 54 Main. What we had always enjoyed there is now gone. They will likely live off of their reputation for awhile, but won't survive if the kitchen keeps taking shortcuts, and the service is so frantic. We wish them well in whatever they do, but whatever they do, they'll be doing it without us for now. Here's to a full recovery!
