“Good food, good service”
Reviewed January 24, 2013

I visited this restaurant as part of a large group of business colleagues. Our meal was ordered and served family style, and therefore we all got to sample a wide range of entrees and starters. Every one was delicious. The staff was lovely and attentive. Highly recommend.

“A Memorable Experience!”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

We went to a corporate dinner with a group of about twelve people and it was a great experience. The food was delicious and Martha (one of the owners) was our hostess. She is not only a fabulous and attentive hostess but she is hysterically funny to boot. Add on top of that live music by a Grammy-winning jazz artist and it made for a memorable night. We already have reservations to go back next month.

“Awesome Experience”
Reviewed January 6, 2013

We went here last night as 3 couples looking for a fun night out. We got what we were looking for. We had 6PM seating on a Saturday. There is plenty of parking out back. We were warmly greeted by one of the owners and given a choice of 2 tables. Both were a bit small for 6 but workable. Our waiter came over and greeted us, explained the menu a bit, and took our drink orders. He also asked up front about allergies which I appreciate as I have green pepper allergies. The drinks were very good. Our waiter suggested the dim sum sampler which was excellent. It gave us a taste of everything and they size it for the number of people at the table. We really enjoyed it. The calamari was my favorite. We asked for some recommendations for entrees which were right on point. We all sampled each other's entrees. Two of us including me had the Peking Duck which was plentiful and extremely tasty. The skin was perfectly crispy and the meat very tender. I could have uses 1-2 more pancakes though. My wife ordered the General Tso's chicken which was not on the menu but they immediately told her they could do it for her. It was crispy, tender, and tasty. One friend ordered the Neptune's basket which was very good. The edible shell really made this dish. Another friend ordered the snapper which was a whole snapper deconstructed, fried, covered in a general tso's type sauce and then deboned at the table. It tasted every bit as good as it sounds. Finally one friend had the mango shrimp which he enjoyed. I did not try this one but a couple people said it was a bit too sweet. We also shared an order of young chow fried rice which everyone enjoyed. For dessert we went with the dessert sampler which was presented nicely. I enjoyed the mint ice cream and the brownie the most. We also had after dinner drinks, tawny ports. OK now to the Jazz. The timing was very good. The band was set up but timed the start of the show for when people already had ordered and their food was coming out. We were sitting in the back corner which gave us the perfect location for maintaining conversation and enjoying the show. The show did a lot to get the crowd involved which was very nice. They finished up right as people were eating dessert. The other owner checked in several times throughout the night on us. One couple announced to us early in the night that they were having a baby. The waiter and owner asked several times if they could get her anything to make her more comfortable. We all really appreciated this. Shanghai jazz will be a regular stop for us even though we my wife and I are 2 hrs away. The overall bill was not inexpensive but we certainly got what we paid for.

“Great Music & Food, Intimate Setting”
Reviewed December 16, 2012

My experience has been it's always an enjoyable evening at Shanghai Jazz. David and Martha are gracious hosts, the service is attentive, the food consistently very good and the jazz first rate. Lately we've been ordering the Dim Sum Sampler as an appetizer, which offers a nice variety, such as pot stickers, dumplings, California rolls, jicama salad and a green bean salad. A great way to kick-off the evening. For the main course I had the sliced filet mignon with shitake mushrooms in a spicy sauce, which was nicely prepared. My wife had the sesame chicken with broccoli, which was also excellent. She noted that the simple preparation of the broccoli was a perfect balance for the chicken. I'd say that typifies the approach here, there's nice balance to what's on your plate and the portions aren't overwhelming so that you can actually order dessert and enjoy it. Desserts are solid - tonight we had the cheese cake, chocolate mousse cake and the dulce de leche gelato and all we're very good.

The jazz musicians who perform at Shanghai Jazz are top notch, with credits such as Grammy awards/nominations and playing with some of the all time greats. And there are usually suprises in store as musicians in the audience will often sit in with the featured performers for a song or more. On one occassion we saw Diana Krall's guitarist Russell Malone sit in with Bucky Pizzarelli for a set and another time we heard Brazilian Grammy Award winning trumpet player Claudio Roditi. You don't have to go to New York City to hear world class jazz musicians. It's great to have a wonderful place like this in New Jersey. If you enjoy classic jazz and excellent Asian food (there are Thai, Chinese, Korean and Japanese influenced dishes on the menu) in a warm atmosphere, I highly recommend that you head to Shanghai Jazz.
