Excellently prepared Italian food. I had linguini with white clam sauce. Very generous with the clams. Party of four all very satisfied with their meals. The service was friendly though inconsistant. Good ambiance. BYOB

Based on two recommendations, we decided to try Gelone on a Saturday night. We managed to get in as they weren't taking reservations. It has a simple dining room that is pleasant enough and doesn't feel crowded. We started with:
Eggplant rollantine-Melenzane Ripiene-they serve 4 of them- unbelievably light with a creamy filling. Portion is more than generous for the price.
Polenta with mushrooms- excellent- too many mushrooms but very good overall.
Gnocchi bolognese- light and the sauce was traditional- great dish.
Fish-special of the night, can't recall the specifics but I do know it was fresh and tasty.
Dessert- we shared a ricotta cheesecake- not the best but good.
The service that night was off. We had a waitress that was new, understandable. However, we did have another waiter asking us what we wanted for dessert as we were waiting for our entree to arrive. Then we had another one offer us a check, again when our entree had not arrived and a bus boy bring us bread and olive oil all over again. We had a few good laughs. I am assuming that was an off night issue and not the norm. I was pleased overall and would return (always key).

Gelone is a really good locally-owned restaurant with a pleasant ambiance and a very appealing Early Bird Special 4:30-6:00 p.m. Monday-Thursday: $15.95 for a three-course dinner. First-course choices included mussels marinara (about 2 dozen) and bruschetta (four pieces heaped with nicely seasoned chopped tomato mixture) as well as soup and salad selections. For the main course we tried pollo (chicken) marsala and veal Sorrentino, both nicely prepared, flavorful, and served with perfectly cooked fresh green beans and half a roasted potato. Dessert choices included a fabulous toasted almond cake, tiramisu, ice cream. Coffee or tea is included.
Many of the diners on a Tuesday evening were repeat local guests who, knowing this is a BYOB restaurant, entered with bottles of wine for the waitstaff to open and serve. Servers were friendly, knowledgeable, attentive, and worked as a team. Portions are generous: many diiners took food home.
The regular menu offers more selections than the early bird fixed price menu, including vegetarian entrees. If you are in this part of New Jersey, there is no need to go into New York City for a good Italian dinner.
