“Italian Sausages”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 2, 2012

While there are many choices on the menu, my favorite is the Italian sausage sandwich with the works (peppers, onions and potatoes). It's just like you can get at the boardwalk in Seaside Hts. but without the flies. The sandwich comes in regular or large. The location on the Boulevard in Kenilworth is great with convenient parking in the rear.

“Only one Jimmy Buff's”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 29, 2012

Been eating Buff's for over 30 years. This is the newest and cleanest of all their locations. The food is excellent. Everything tastes fresh and is cooked to perfection. The staff is friendly and nice to talk with. A must stop if you're traveling through Kenilworth. No one makes an Italian hot dog like JB's. I'd give them 6 stars if I could!

“Double is the way to go”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 22, 2012

Love. JB for a long time. I travel about 20 min from home to JB on rt22. I was happy when JB opened in Kenelworth closer to home. Tried it but it is not the same as all the others. It's not bad it's just different.

“A New Jersey tradition”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 24, 2011

I guess everyplace has its own junk food specialty. Few people from outside the state are aware of this, but there are many long-time restaurants in New Jersey whose cuisine is hot dogs. A specialty in northern New Jersey is “Italian hot dogs.” Legend has it that the Italian hot dog was invented by Jimmy Buff in Newark about 75 years ago, and to this day virtually ALL Italian hot dog joints are within a ten or fifteen mile radius of the Italian neighborhood of North Newark. Over the years the Jimmy Buff hot dog empire, now run by the founder's descendants, has expanded to about a half-dozen locations. Their newest is in Kenilworth.

What's an Italian hot dog? First, picture a vat of hot oil. Its tilted so one end is deeper than the other. At the shallow end are simmering heaps of sliced onions, peppers and potatoes. When you order your hot dog, they drop an all-beef hot dog into the deep end and slide in some onions, peppers and potatoes When its done, they slice open half of a “pizza roll” (another north Jersey specialty; picture a thick pita made out of bread), slather the inside with mustard, put in the deep-fried hot dog, top it off with some onions, peppers and potatoes, and sprinkle some salt on top. If you're from somewhere in the heartland this might sound like a strange combination, but just writing about it is making my mouth water.

Whats so great about THIS Jimmy Buff's location? Over the years, a handful of Italian hot dog challengers have come along. One of them, Charlie's Italian Hot Dogs, has been in Kenilworth for years. In fact, about a year ago, Travel Channel's Food Wars show featured the rivalry between Jimmy Buff's and Charlie's, and Charlie's won. Now, with the opening of Jimmy Buff's in Charlie's backyard, Kenilworth has become Ground Zero for New Jersey Italian hot dogs. If you're REALLY hungry, you can have your own taste comparison by just walking a few blocks.

Some tips about Italian hot dogs: Do not try to eat it in your car. Stay and eat it at the restaurant. Clothing and car upholstery are far more attractive without stains from fried onions and peppers. And make sure you have a paper plate to catch the droppings. Every morsel is delicious. For those who REALLY like the Italian hot dog flavor, get a double. You'll be tasting it for the rest of the day.
