The location of this hotel was wonderful. Right across from NYC. The Path trains are just a few blocks from the hotel. Easy access to the city for first timers. The area felt very safe. I noticed apt buildings around us. Lots of families using the boardwalk. Area had several restaurants and a grocery store. Also a New Target was just down the street. Thats always a plus! Free on site parking. Our room was a one bedroom suite that had a kitchenette. The bed and linens were very comfortable. Bathroom was nice. I would recommend this hotel if you are driving your own car. Being able to hop in it when you want was great. The lot was secured too.

Room Tip: Ask for a view. We were able to see the Empire State Bldg. Small view, but it was still there!

We stayed in a one bedroom suite comprising a bedroom, sitting room + kitchenette, and bathroom. It was very spacious and well equipped. TV in bedroom and sitting room, iron, hairdryer, large fridge, coffee machine, microwave, stove, and sofabed. Loads of storage. There is a free laundry room with washers and dryers, which is really handy! In the lobby is a store with basic supplies (though cheaper to go to the grocery store a 5 min walk away). Some reviewers spoke of problems with the shower - this wasn't our experience. Not very powerful, but perfectly adequate. The towels are changed weekly, but you can get fresh towels from the reception if you need them sooner than this. There is also free wi-fi in the bedroom. The one downside to the room was that the wall between adjoining rooms is really thin, and we could hear our neighbour talking on his phone (and everything else!)

The location was very convenient. 10min walk from Newport PATH station (which takes you into central Manhatten) and 5min walk from Exchange Place PATH station (which takes you to the World Trade Centre downtown). Or you can take the free hotel shuttle bus to the station, which runs half hourly, if you prefer not to walk. There is a nice pier at Exchange Place where you can sit and admire the New York skyline - if you go there, try out the great sandwiches and shakes from Potbellys. There are a number of restaurants and bars within walking distance.

The staff at the hotel were really helpful and friendly. When we arrived, the bath plug was missing, but was replaced within 5 mins. There is an electronic information point in the lobby with info about local restaurants/taxis/etc. You can also do your online check-in from here and print out your boarding passes. But we had problems with this, and so ended up using the receptionist's PC instead.

Not cheap, but certainly cheaper than staying in New York city, and you get a lot more for your money. Would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the river on one of the higher floors - great view of NYC skyline and the...

I stayed here while visiting NYC, It's a little weird that the check in counter was attached to the door but thats not a concern at all. Stayed in a 1 bedroom suite, everything was great except for the shower. At times hot water was very limited to the point you are taking a cold shower. Staff was good. There is a shopping mall and grocery store within walking distance (15mins). Lightrail or walk(10mins) will take you to Exchange Pl(PATH) that will take you into NYC. Area is very safe.In the daytime on weekday lots and lots of business ppl around, on week-end the area becomes very nice and very quiet. First time staying at Candlewood and would come back if shower isnt going to be an issue.

I routinely drive rather than fly when I visit NYC. Staying at Candlewood Suites Jersey City is a welcome respite from the madness "over there". Being able to park my own car (free) and access it whenever I want is a BIG plus. If you are a low-maintenance traveler looking for clean, roomy accommodations at a fair price try Candlewood Suites. There are wonderful restaurants, a beautiful waterfront with a view of Manhattan, and easy, easy public transport to NYC within a short stroll of Candlewood Suites. I felt safe walking the neighborhood, even at night. Prices are higher than other Candlewoods but lower than NYC and much nicer than anything else in the price range. And you get a full kitchen. They're also cheerfully dog-friendly. Be a good dog parent and follow the rules.

Room Tip: I had an extra loud A/C unit on my most recent visit (8/2012). I'll ask for a quieter room next...

Our suite was newly renovated with all new furnishing. Everything was clean and spotless. I could not have asked for anything more. I would have given this place 5 stars except that the room had an odor from the previous guest's cooking. The location is 10 minutes across the Holland Tunnel with the price much lower than within NYC and security gates for in/out access. Hotel staff was very accommodating and extreme nice. Would definitely come back next time.

As you'd expect from a "suite" hotel, room was very ... roomy, clean, fully equipped kitchen if you want to prepare your own meal, clean and ample bathroom, flat-screen tvs in both living room and bedroom, and, while the hotel claims wi-fi is available in lobby only, we had perfect connection in our 5th-floor room. All of that for under $200, with free parking. (You can on occasion find a similar price in NYC, but for basically a tiny room and parking will cost you an additional $35+/24 hrs, with no in/outs during that period.) Hotel is near the Hudson River, so nice view over NYC skyline. It is within walking distance to 3 PATH stations, so a quick $2 ride into either the Downtown Wall Street area or Midtown Manhattan. The closest of the 3 is Exchange Place (to Downtown), a brisk 5-min walk; the hotel provides a shuttle if you'd rather not walk (we didn't try it). For those who wish to cook, there is a supermarket 2 blocks away.

The only negative was that one afternoon we turned the a/c off when we left and, upon return, the room (525) stunk of what seemed to be stale cigarette smoke, although might have been just mildew. Once the a/c back on, the smell vanished in minutes.

There are no restaurants within easy walking distance, so this is a not a place for people without a car. With a car, a 5-min drive takes you to Hoboken, where restaurants abound.

Room Tip: Request a room facing the Hudson River, for a vista on the NYC skyline.

I'm a frequent traveler to Jersey City but generally on weekends. Most of the JC hotels had highly inflated rates for week day stays so I tried the Candlewood Suites which had a reasonable rate. It was conveniently located, had free parking, and the room was clean. I only stayed one night so I didn't get to try out the kitchen in the suite but it was clean and neat.

My first room had a broken toilet but they switched me quickly and when I was heading to my new room maintenance was already in the old room fixing it. The second room was fine.

I had a car so going to the PATH station wasn't necessary but if I had to it was a slight walk to either the Newport or Exchange Place stations, further than the other JC hotels.

I would stay here again.
