“Decent authentic Chinese food in central Jersey”
Reviewed May 25, 2011

We held a small banquet there with relatives, and were satisfied with the dishes laid out for dinner. I suppose that's saying much, since we're all Chinese and can be very picky with the food. The restaurant seemed pretty lonely along US-1, with nothing more than a local hotel nearby, and strangely, on a Saturday night it wasn't full. We had lobster, steak, shrimp, fish, and to top it all off - ice cream. All of it was good, but not great.

New York City Chinatown can't be beat, but if you want a peaceful authentic Chinese dinner with lots of friends (and children), ample parking, and reasonable prices, this isn't a bad place to start.

“Great Food, in Need of a Major Redecoration”
Reviewed June 17, 2010

King Chef has been in Iselin for many years. I remember when it opened; the opulent foyer and elegant chandelier, mosaic floor and plush dark green carpeting, the huge fish tanks with carp, koi and catfish swimming. Unfortunately, it appears that nothing has been done to preserve this beautiful setting. The floor is cracked the carpeting is filthy (my feet actually stuck to it in a few places.) The benches are torn and faded and the chandelier is crusted with dust and dirt. The table linens were clean, however, as were the dining chairs. So I overlooked my original impression when ordering my meal.

Their food is quite good. Lunch specials are extremely reasonable, and come with soup and choice of white, brown or fried rice. The Hot and Sour and Wonton Soups were very tasty. One member of our party ordered the seafood soup for 2, expecting to take some home, and ate it all as her entrée. The sesame chicken and General Tso’s chicken were both enjoyable. And the shrimp lo mein was exceptional. The fish of the day was bass and was presented whole, then filleted at the table. It was steamed flaky and light.

Our party was there celebrating a kindergarten graduation, and the waiter provided special Shirley Temples, with cherries and umbrellas to the honoree without being asked. He also provided our table with a complementary assortment of sorbets, ringed with fresh oranges.

It’s a shame the place has been allowed to fall into such disrepair, because their food is excellent, and well worth a return visit.
