We found La Costenita through a Tripadvisor search. We were looking for a local(ish) Mexican restaurant that we hadn’t tried before and we were well rewarded.
La Costenita is a small grocery store / eatery tucked into a Hillsborough strip mall. In the front of the store there are several colorful tables for patrons to sit and enjoy their meals. In the back is a series of counters and cases stocked with prepared foods and items for purchase. The walls are lined with grocery shelves (lots of chilies and hot sauces). It has a very neighborly feel.
The young staff behind the counter was pleasant and polite. They engaged in a lively discussion as they prepared our orders. In the far back corner was a small counter with three stools occupied by some enthusiastic teens. They watched intently as a young lady worked the grill situated directly behind the counters. The pace was slow and easy; no one was harried or rushed. I perused the shelves of Mexican staples while I waited.
We ordered nachos with crispy pork, chicken enchiladas and a spicy chicken burrito. Everything was delicious. But, what stood out most was the freshness of the ingredients. Our nachos were exceptional. They didn’t look like the nachos we are used too, masses of unrecognizable fixings glued together with yellow processed cheese. Instead, the crispy chips were smattered with “goo-less” black beans and a white tangy cheese. The enchiladas and the burritos were equally enjoyable, fresh and tasty.
Looking forward to a return trip.
One warning, the main courses were spicy! If you prefer a more moderate level of heat speak up when you place your order!
