Went on a last minute Groupon visit, brought extra people. Waiter handled this well, no problems with money. Service was rather slow, but we were a table of 8 on a week night with 3-4 other tables of 4 and a bar full of people(one waiter).Waiter was pleasant. Place was clean and attractive. Food ranged from "odd tasting steak" and over-done pork to very good calamari, wings, and chorizo appetizers. Delicious bread.Prices on food very reasonable, and we would like to try a few other Portuguese specialties-would probably return to try appetizers . We have been to "Little Portugal" in Newark several times to several places, and this is not even close, so don't go in expecting it to be- but it isn't bad, either.Charges for soft drink (sprite) very high, no discount on refills ($15 for 3 sprites, one was a refill). Bar seemed to have family/friends there and looked OK. I think there is potential here, but the inconsistency makes you wonder what the problem is(like unmarked doors to enter that are locked where a little "please use other entrance" with an arrow would be helpful, or the big sign/ad out front having the wrong info on happy hour, as it doesn't match what's printed on menus inside). I hope they pull it together and do well and make it-it would be a real asset to the area

We stopped in for a late lunch on a Tuesday afternoon, and we the only people there. The waiter initially brought what appeared to be the dinner menu, which looked pretty good, although pricey for lunch. We were just there for a light lunch, so I asked whether they had a bar menu, and he then brought out the lunch menu. Oh.. and the bread he brought out prior to us ordering... so crunchie and wonderful.. I could have just eaten that and been happy. But three of us shared a pulled pork sandwich, a buffalo chicken sandwich and a caesar salad. The waiter gladly cut the sandwiches into three so each of us could try a little. The food was very good, and exactly as expected, although the pulled pork was a little sweeter than you'll find down south. Sandwiches were hot, and the salad cold. Salad dressing flavorful and plentiful.

The place looked like it would be a great neighborhood hangout in the evening.. there were a number of specials advertised by day of the week, and bar specials as well. The main room and bar area were clean, as was the bathroom. The one waiter was friendly and efficient. The only thing that slightly marred the atmosphere were the table numbers on each table. This made me feel like I was at a wedding with assigned seating.

As a local this is a welcome relief from the hole in the wall taverns in the area. My issue is that the keep changing things up. The food honestly has gone from terrible to good (although the owners are supposed to be from the Newark area and Portuguese-food is not even close to the any average restaurant there).
The bar specials were a good value until they started cheating on the drinks and apps. Both have gotten smaller but with the same price. They also have a large sign outside stating the happy hour is 3-7. Once you are inside you figure out the happy hour food and drink specials end at 6. No one lets you know until the bill arrives and the bartender informs you of the change (it is on small print inside the menu). They should stop trying to rip people off, and just have good food with reasonable prices. Word travels fast in a small town.

Our visit to the restaurant was on Valentine's Day. We went not for a romantic dinner but to meet friends and enjoy the music. We were not disappointed. We had a great time, the music was fun and familiar, the staff friendly and the atmosphere warm and friendly. The menu though, because of Valentine's Day was limited and no bar menu was available (I was hoping for a burger). I ordered the mussels appetizer and my husband the ribs. The full rack of ribs were tender and moist. The mussels, while also tender, had broken shells that required extra work to insure there weren't pieces attached to the meat. Very disappointing. And, it is always nice to have a piece or two of crostini to sop up the broth. The bread on the table, while good, came with a little condiment cup of olive oil with a dried herb sprinkled on top. It was not very pleasant and was unsophisticated in comparison to the menu. In the end, would we return for another meal? Only if we could try a burger.

It is nice to have a decent restaurant in the area . The seafood soup is incredible, and my husband is addicted to it. The staff is nice, especially the bartenders. So, if you want to sit at the bar, watch tv and unwind with a drink and a snack, try the Tavern. If you want a nice dinner, especially the prime rib, make the Tavern your stop. Even open on Mondays.
