Tucked between buildings in downtown Freehold, La Cipollina is not easy to find but well worth the effort. We ate here on Friday evening of Labor Day weekend and our food and the service were excellent. The restaurant is small but has both indoor and outdoor (seasonal) seating. They accept reservations and we were seated promptly.
Our waitress wore a tuxedo jacket and that fit with the upscale decor. She was knowledgeable on menu items and was friendly without being intrusive.
Our appetizer was the mozzarella with tomato and roasted peppers. The mozzarella was made fresh at the restaurant and it was excellent. The tomato was ripe and tasty. My entre was Pork Osso Bucco with Safron Risotto. Tender, lean and flavorful, this was an excellent and hearty meal. My wife had Shrimp and Scallops with Fresh Tomato, Basil and White Wine over Cappellini. Very good and a generous serving.
Even the bread service was impressive. Thick sliced Italian bread served with sides of olives, chick peas, and flavored olive oil.
The icing on the cake was that this is a BYO restaurant and we were able to bring our own favorite wine. I would highly reccomend La Cipollina to family or friends. There is only one downside. The tables in the dining room are just packed too close together. This distracts from the atmosphere.
