Hyatt Place Fair Lawn Paramus
Ranked #1 of 1 Hotels in Fair Lawn
Reviewed August 9, 2014

At first I saw people had problems finding the hotel through GPS, but reading some of the reviews before I booked the room, I called and got some great directions through the front staff. The staff were very helpful and even the manager came to greet us when they found out we drove from Texas. This is a great alternative to stay at than the overpriced hotels in Manhattan. When we go back to NYC, we will definitely be back at the Hyatt in NJ. Breakfast was good and the hotel was nice and quiet, I will definitely recommend this hotel!!!

This hotel would only get a 2 or 3 star rating from us if it hadn't been for a few things that helped elevate its score slightly.

First off, it took us forever to find the access point to the hotel from the highway. Don't rely on your GPS or phone maps to bring you to the right place - you'll end up in some residential area about 10 minutes away. The address is 41-01 Broadway Street, but it's actually on Route 208, which is a six-lane high-speed "highway". I was a little surprised that any hotel would have it's driveway off such a busy road. Quite scary trying to pull into the hotel, actually.

That aside, when we checked in, staff were friendly and helpful. Our bedroom was nice, exactly what we paid for. The layout was a little different than what we're used to, but still very nice, functional, and quite large.

The staff informed us that the pool was open until 10pm, so having driven a good 8hrs, we were eager to hop in for a relaxing dip. Unfortunately, the pool needs work - it's quite gross! We couldn't tell if it was just really dirty, or stained from years of use. Either way, the hotel could use a pool renovation. We didn't dare get in the pool... Disappointing...

We all slept well - beds, pillows and linens all comfortable.

The best part was breakfast in the morning. Lots of hot foods to chose from, including breakfast sandwiches and eggs with spinach and mushroom, as well as your regular stuff like waffles, fruit, cereal, muffins, juices and milk. The breakfast really made up for the stress of finding/accessing the hotel and the gross pool.

All in all, a 3-4 star hotel.

We booked and paid for a room for 4 people with 2 double beds and a sofa bed. Although our reservations said that our room was guaranteed regardless of how late we checked in (and, quite frankly, WE were NOT allowed to change/ alter/ cancel it, but apparently THEY are allowed to alter/ change it), when we got there they did not have the room we booked available. Instead, they gave us a room with 1 king bed.

We went back to the desk explaining that we had a guaranteed 2 bed/ 1 sofa bed room for 4 people- we could not fit all 4 people in 1 bed (nor would we want to). We were told that all they had left were single bed rooms, and we would have to take it. Again, we stated that our room type was guaranteed (and already paid for) to which they replied that they only guarantee that they will give you a room- it does not have to be the room you booked.

We told them that we would take 2 rooms to get the two beds we needed (and we had booked for 4 people- so they knew going in that we had/ paid for 4 people who needed beds) , but they said they do not have to honor the number of beds or number of people you booked/ paid for- only the number of rooms (and NOT the room type).

It's a terrible rip-off, and we were forced to sit on the phone for 2 hours trying to find another hotel that had 2 beds that night (after driving for 7 hours)!

As we sat theretrying to find another place to stay, the noise level at the hotel was unreal! There were kids running through and yelling non-stop. It was out of control!

You do not get what you pay for with this hotel, and their customer service is the worst! Do yourself a favor and stay anywhere else but here. I cannot believe Hyatt allows them to fly their flag!

Room Tip: It doesn't matter what room you choose- the hotel will give you whatever room they have left ove...

First the good--staff was pleasant and helpful, room was comfortable and not noisy. This was the typical Hyatt room, which is better than average compared to most hotels in the same category. What really helps is a large sitting area with a decent sofa. The beds were also comfortable.

Now the not so good. The hotel is at the southern/eastern terminus of NJ 4 & 208. You're driving at 50MPH or better, around a curve, and you barely have time to turn off into the hotel. If you want to drive in the opposite direction, you have to drive a mile in the wrong way before you can turn around.

The breakfast was ok, but there were too many people having breakfast for the space that was available--and the hotel had even opened up one of their meeting rooms so people could have breakfast. While our room was quiet, the lobby/breakfast area was very noisy.

The Hyatt Place in Johns Creek, GA (near Atlanta) and in Seattle didn't seem to have any of these issues.

Room Tip: Hotel is only four stories high. Ask for a room on the 3d or 4th floor so you won't hear lobby...

The hotel itself was fine. Room was large, beds were comfortable, and breakfast was good. Other reviews about this hotel being hard to find are 100% accurate. Had a TomTom and a GPS on my phone. Both of them sent me to some residential neighborhood and told me I had reached my destination. Drove around for an extra half hour before stumbling upon it. We had tickets to a Yankee game. After being told by the guy at the front desk not to even think about driving my own vehicle, I was encouraged to take the bus from the nearby mall to the port authority, then pick up the subway. The guy and another woman at the counter both said it was a 30-45 trip. Sounded reasonable. What horrible advice. We left the bus stop at the mall at 4:10. We arrived at the port authority at 6:35. The game was at 7:10. We missed the first 2 innings of the game. To make matters worse, on the way back, we were not even dropped off at the mall. We were dropped off about 10 minutes from the mall by foot and had to walk through a dark neighborhood that didn't look too friendly at 12:30 AM. We purposely picked this hotel due to its proximity to Yankee Stadium. I had talked with staff on the phone before booking about how easy the trip was to the Stadium and was assured both on the phone and in person about how easy and smooth it was. This was the worst advice I have ever taken. I know that traffic in the city is not the fault of the hotel staff. What is the fault of the hotel staff is recommending this type of travel, when they know traffic is going to be horrible. When we finally got back to the hotel it was 1:00AM. Just wanting to go to sleep, we were kept awake by loud people both in the parking lot and in room around us. There was a dog barking in a room on our floor that could be heard often. Again, the hotel itself is fine in terms of amenities and condition, but I would not stay here again.

Room Tip: we had a room with two double beds and a pull out sofa bed. It was very spacious.

If you choose to stay here DO NOT drink at the bar. Once my drink was poured I noticed there were a bunch of larva with wings floating on the bottom of the glass. On inspection of the replacement drink that they poured me, the ice they used was filled with brown dirt.

This is your basic - very basic Hyatt Place - the location is, awful; hard by the side of 4 West and 208 North, sleep is a challenge - even with ear plugs.

Air Conditioning Unit is the standard type of wall mounted noisy, inefficient type.

Breakfast is a disappointment of non-heart healthy choices - high fructose corn syrup cereals and fake eggs are just not good enough - there is a bowl of pre-prepared fruit salad and oatmeal - that's it.

Internet is actually HIGH SPEED, Front office staff are friendly, but the General Management does not give them sufficient leverage to empower them to their optimal efficiency.

Would never stay here again, unless all hotels in the area were sold out.

Room Tip: Avoid at all costs any room on 1, 2, 3 or with the 03, 05, 07, 09, 11 ...... designators

Thank you for taking the time to comment on your stay at Hyatt Place. I'm sorry to hear you were unable to find a heart healthy choice for breakfast. I hope you will try our assorted yogurts, cottage cheese, whole wheat breads or peanut butter the next time you stay at one of our hotels. I also love to take advantage of the raisin brand with banana's and skim milk.
If the front desk was unable to offer you optimal efficiency I certainly hope one of our management staff members were able to assist you with any needs you may have had during your stay.
If I can assist you with anything please feel free to contact me direct.

Have a great day!
