“A nice settings, mediocre food”
Reviewed May 31, 2013

We came with our kids who are pretty selective and were negatively surprised to see that they did not even have a kids menu. At least the kids could enjoy the white rice. However, the "serious" food was also nice but nothing more than that. I did expect more after everything I heard about this place.

We sincerely appologize you did not have a spectacular time at Daruma. It is obvious our wait staff did not properly guide you through your dining experience. We will retrain our servers to better guide our Guests with children for the future. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

If you would kindly join us again in the future, please note that we have many kid friendly dishes on our regular menu. For appetizers you can get chicken frittos - served with sweet potatoe fries & sweet chili sauce, or chicken yakitori. And popular kitchen entrees are Japanese udon, or nabeyaki udon. There is also Japanese fried rice with choice of vegetables, chicken, shrimp, or seafood. We also have simple rolls from the sushi bar like avocado roll, or california roll. There is lots more depending on your Childrens palates.

Again, thank you for bringing this to our attention & we hope you try us again.

“Good sushi, great service, nice atmosphere”
Reviewed March 17, 2013 via mobile

I went for lunch with 2 friends. The waiter was very good - we told him we were short on time and our food came quickly but was still fresh and delicious.

“Our go-to place for sushi”
Reviewed August 20, 2012

We regularly go to Daruma for lunch or dinner to enjoy the sushi. We have been pleased with the quality of the sushi rolls. The rolls are of a nice size, and we generally find 6 rolls is more than enough for 2 for dinner. We’ve had both the specialty rolls and the standard rolls. We particularly like the crunchy jalapeno, sunset and monster rolls. The California roll with real crab is worth the difference in price. The tempura is good, but the shrimp order only contains 2 shrimp and a large number of vegetables (probably it is the vegetable order + 2 shrimp). We have also had some of the Japanese items (teriyaki salmon) that were fine. We mainly come here for the sushi though. It is BYOB as well. There is s small free parking lot next door.

“Close to NY”
Reviewed February 3, 2012

The sushi here is about as good as you'd get across the bridge in Manhattan. And, you'll save the toll, traffic and parking hassle.

“Went downhill”
Reviewed January 6, 2012

I had been to Daruma for lunch once, about 3 years ago, by myself. Had a delicious meal of broiled cod fish plus sushi, so had a good memory of the place. Finding myself with my wife in the area, decided to eat there again. Alas, they've changed the menu, gone are all the interesting entrees, replaced by Chinese food disguised as Japanese and all those fancy (and corny) rolls featuring mango, spicy tuna and other wannabe favorites. I don't know if they changed management, didn't ask as the manager was engrossed on a long phone conversation as we were leaving, but the food was not remarkable at all. they managed to mangle the tataki and the hamachi scallion rolls we ordered, so I'm glad I didn't get the sushi. I can't even recommend it as a neighborhood place. The prices are way too high for that. Avoid - cross the Hudson and get some real Japanese if you can.
