“Great Indian food, impressive interior, friendly service”
Reviewed September 8, 2013

Over the years we have probably visited every Indian restaurant in the greater Mercer/Middlesex area, and we are happy to pronounce that Akbar as one of the very best.
First and foremost, Akbar is not your typical strip-mall Indian restaurant. A stand-alone building features opulent décor, very cozy, if not romantic, interior and huge dining area. Very impressive, A+.
The service is very friendly too, but quite efficient and professionally streamlined at the same time. Our requests regarding specific spiciness were mostly honored and followed attentively.
Now, what is important to know ahead of time is that the portion sizes are quite larger than in the majority of the area Indian restaurants. The prices are higher too, but as noted, the portion size makes up well for the difference. Plus Akbar often runs promotions via various discount dining sites, which makes one's visit even more attractive, budget-wise.
Now the food quality. Excellent! Almost every dish we ordered was cooked to perfection, nicely presented, sometimes full of surprises by its unusual blend of spices. We would like to specifically recommend Mango Shrimp as an appetizer. Murg Vindaloo as a main course was very good too. Kabab Guldasta was a veritable gastronomic celebration, featuring five different kebabs and served not just sizzling (as in your typical Indian restaurant) but a la flambé. Very appetizing and delicious.
The menu also offers quite a few non-Indian desserts which is a big plus too.
One word of advise. Because of the restaurant's spacious banquet facilities, often a time, especially on weekends, there are big-scale group celebrations taking place at Akbar. A valet parking is then in place, so you better have a few dollars in cash for the parking's tips.
We will absolutely, undoubtedly and most definitely come again very soon. Our 35 minutes drive was well worth it.

“Don't eat here. Ever”
Reviewed June 26, 2013

This place is the most unsanitary restaurant I've ever been to. People had their hands all over the naan and were putting it back in the buffet trays. Someone picked up 3 different glasses of water, sipped them, then put them back down. We told the staff what we saw, and they just left those glasses of water on the table for other people to drink. I have never seen anything like it. Staff was extremely rude. Food is overrated. Quite possibly the worst dining experience I've ever had.

“Fabulous food!”
Reviewed April 30, 2013

My friends and I were looking for a halfway point b/n South Jersey and Brooklyn to meet up, and I randomly picked Exit 10 (Edison) off the Turnpike as a place to try and meet. My friend Marg actually found this place (not sure what search engine she used), but it was ridiculously easy to get to from the exit, and the food was FANTASTIC! We were the only 'non-natives' in the building- and that place was packed! The day we were there they had 2 portions of the restaurant closed off for two private affairs. Even with the private parties going on, the portion of the restaurant open to the public had a well stocked buffet and the service was excellent. In fact, after the floor manager discovered it was our first time there and he treated us to a bowl their yellow lentils (which were not part of the buffet). Yowzer! So, so good! My friends and I said that this may become our new meeting place! There was also plenty of parking, it was in a well-lit, open area so as a woman traveling alone, I felt very comfortable. I didn't have to worry about finding street parking or having to parallel park.

They do have a full bar and outdoor seating, but as a private affair was being held within that area, we didn't get the opportunity to really take full advantage of our visit, but we WILL be back!

“Excellent and Authentic Indian Food in Edison”
Reviewed March 16, 2013 via mobile

I say authentic because when we walked in, past the two affairs going on in the private banquet halls, we were the only ones not of apparent Indian descent in the crowded, beautifully appointed dining room. We were greeted by a suited maitre'd and waited on by suited and liveried waiters. We felt like royalty. The best part was the food. Really tasty, Baighan Bahrta and a yellow Dal, with roti. Simple dishes, wonderfully prepared and elegantly served. The prices were also very reasonable, compared to our home town experiences. We wish we lived in the area and could go back.
