“Excellent modern restaurant”
Reviewed December 4, 2012

We had dinner here with friends last Sunday night; what a surprise! really delightful spacious room; plenty of room between tables;furnished with great taste. I especially loved the beautiful solid wood chairs. Pleasant, efficient service. Not a huge menu but plenty of choice - wonderful duck, spare ribs, unexpected sorbet and amuse bouche. Very creative cooking with some unusual combinations. We did not know the area and had spent the previous week in Manhattan - this was undoubtedly the best meal we had. Our friends had told us it was a bring your own wine establishment which we are not used to in Europe and had made us a little wary, but we were very pleasantly surprised. highly recommended.

“One of the best in the state, if not tri-state”
Reviewed November 10, 2012

Never write reviews for restaurants and have no ties to ownership or employees of Pairings. My wife, who is a talented chef herself, and i make it a point to visit top restaurants in NYC and NJ and i can say unequivocally that Pairings is at or near the top of our list. The food from start to finish is extraordinary; not too complicated or forced, but different, creative, and absolutely delicious (I cannot describe it with words, you have it see the menu and try it yourself). The chef is an instructor at the Culinary Institute of America. The service is quiet, unassuming and friendly, and perfectly knowledgeable and disciplined. The decor is vibrant and open without being too edgy and forced; the kitchen is totally open for viewing. Large windows and a corner location make one think of a Hopper painting. I'm not sure what words work best here. It is humble, enjoyable, unbelievably flavorful, creative, and a tremendous value to boot, which I consider heavily in my restaurant ratings. Yes, you are paying $28 to $36 for an entree but the experience is well worth it. Nice add-ins (gorgonzola/pistachio wrapped grape as a beginner/ sorbet to wet the pallet) and the best dessert I have ever had round it out. About as recommended as they come. It's a BYO no less. Times gave it three stars, I believe, and the Ledger 3.5 stars. I think they missed the mark by quite a bit.

“Spectacular”
Reviewed August 28, 2012 via mobile

Very creative menu, food well prepared and very tasty. A real gem. Management and staff very attentive but not overbearing. Tuna and short ribbs a real hit. Also, don't miss the crabcake appetizer. BYOB and parking on the street or in the municipal lot. Attractively decorated.

“Great date night restuarant”
Reviewed July 14, 2012

Had a delicious dinner at Pairings. A great salad and delicious pasta bolognese was enhanced by lemon ice palate cleansers, good bread and attentive service. Very nice ambience - chic modern decor, quiet, pristine white table cloths was just right for date night. My fave - no wobbly tables! I hate that. Its BYO like many area restuarants which makes it much more affordable than NYC dining and closer to home. For those who aren't familiar with the area, it's walking distance to NJ transit train stop, plenty of free parking in a municipal lot on weekend evenings and a cute little downtown.

“way to slow and dissapointing”
Reviewed July 10, 2012

We had been here before 1x. We enjoyed the food but the service is terrible! We didn't think it could possible we worse or slower then it was the last time we were here. We waited almost 2 hrs to eat our main course- we were told bc the kitchen got backed up- on a Friday night at 8pm?! We were starving and very disgruntled. The food was wonderful but the service was just way to slow especially for the price! Much better off going to ATH (A Toute Heure, cranford) or Boulevard five 72 (Kenilworth) for similar costs but much better service. Management should visit these restaurants to really see how service should be. I think this was enough for us never to return to Pairings. Plus my husband was really sick the next morning and day after eating here.
