We really enjoyed Cape May and all the information that we gained from the staff at the Observatory as well as the other bird watchers at the sites that were recommended by them. A trip to remember!

You can't go to Cape May and skip the birds. You've never looked at anything other than a pigeon? These folks will loan you binoculars, show how to use them, and introduce you to a new world. If you've done any birding before, then you already know that Cape May is THE place to be.

Great selection of optics if you need something. Huge selection of books also - usually pick up one each time we visit (once a year when down at the shore). They have a log where you can see what birds have been seen where, in case you want to try and see them also. Friendly staff.

We always stop into the Bird Observatory shop when we visit Cape May. They have a wonderful selection of binoculars, bird feeders, books, etc. on sale. You can find out the latest info on which birds have been seen in the Cape May area and where they were spotted. There are several bird feeders set up outdoors; many beautiful song birds stop by for a bite to eat! Also love the shade provided by the trees ~ a great place to cool off!

I am writing this review after spending annual vacations at the Jersey Shore since 1979 At first our vacations were timed for the summer beach crowds, but somewhere along the way we met up with the fine people of CMBO.

It was those early morning bird walks at "The Meadows", Stone Harbor Point, Higbee Beach, and "The Beanery". The entrance fee was nominal for the guided experience. We had our own binoculars, but often availed ourselves to the box of "higher end" optics provided courtesy of the CMBO guides and numerous famous optic companies. We had a great time and suddenly found that some of those guides were world renowned bird and nature experts. We started to read their books and articles in various magazines.

Next thing we knew our migration pattern to the Jersey Shore shifted from Summer to coincide with the Spring and Fall bird migrations as we sought more knowledge. While we are not experts, we know a lot thanks to the folks at CMBO. They provide a great natural experience for the whole family.

One other thing... if you are in the market for optics at any price level, CMBO is an excellent place to shop. They will let you view different equipment side-by-side in a non-threatening, non-pushy environment. Once you choose an optic (at any price level) they will personally check it out for flaws. My first binoculars was a $69 pair of 7x21s from a famous company who mass produced these little wonders with very little quality control. The knowledgeable optics manager at CMBO checked out four pairs of these binoculars and pointed out subtle flaws that I could not see with my untrained eye, but would have frustratingly found during regular use. He wanted to make sure that I was satisfied. I was, and have subsequently returned to CMBO for much more expensive and sophisticated equipment. Prices are competitive and profits go to maintain habitat and educational programs in South Jersey.

In a nutshell CMBO is a great place for a nature experience for the whole family with a walk through the marsh, woods and dunes. Be careful though, it just might lead to a life time of birding knowledge and a perennial return to this wonderful part of North America.
