We have been to the Virginia on many occassions and we have always had a lovely time. I must say that I was disappointed with this last visit. Our room was on the third floor and in 79 degree weather that weekend, it never got below 74 degrees in the room. We called the front desk, someone came up right away, but there was really nothing that they could do. The dresser in the room was in need of repair, not to mention a new paint job and the shutters in the bathroom were in need of repainting (paint was chipping off of them). There were no washclothes in the bathroom when we went to shower. I realize that the Virginia can charge the room charge that they do as you are paying for a certain atmosphere, if you will, but the room that we stayed in was a big disappointment this time. I certainly don't mind spending good money for a great hotel experience. As much as we like staying there and the Ebbitt Room dining room is fabulous, after this visit I will need to think long and hard about future visits. Staff were very accomodating and friendly.

Room Tip: Don't take a room on the third floor. There is no elevator either. This could be an issue for th...

We stayed at The Virgina Hotel in Cape May, New Jersey May1-3, 2012. They put us in a room in the pink cottage, which we later learned would be rented as a cottage during the summer months. The location is ideal: an easy walk to the beach. Sadly the weather was awful- rainy and cold. Because we were not in the main part of the hotel, the staff sort of forgot about us and the service was sketchy. We were told that there would be a coffee maker in the room- there was none. ( when we brought this to their attention, they brought coffee to the kitchen of the pink cottage--so that was fine, BUT 3 stories down from our room.) A nice Continental breakfast was included: fresh fruit, yogurt, pastries , juice and coffee. We chose to eat this in the lounge of the main hotel, as our room was tiny. The problem with going the week we did was that nothing very few restaurants were open. The Virginia Hotel has a lovely restaurant--but it wan't open until May 5.
Cape May is a quaint Victorian town - and The Virginia Hotel is very in keeping with this theme. Their sister hotel, Congress Hall , had a surprisingly nice restaurant: the Blue Pig. I would recommend this and avoid the touristy Lobster House at the north end of the island.
There is not much shopping in Cape May- save for the kitchy souvenir shops. So in bad weather off season there is nothing much to do.
I think The Viginia Hotel rented a room from their cottage as a way to make some money off season. Since I didn't stay in the main hotel, I cannot determine if the rooms were nice or not. The service was sometimes great, other times aweful. It took several conversations ( walking across the street to the main hotel from the cottage) to work out our internet service. There was no phone in our room; by the time that we descended the stairs to use the phone in the livingroom of the Pink Cottage, it made more sense just to walk accross the street and have a face to face rather than a phone call.
The Bathroom attached to our room was newly done and very nice. We had to ask for bath robes, but they did bring them over when we asked for them.
The locals are either retired or part of the gay community or both. I would highly recommend Cape May to my gay friends as it is gay friendly. I think that if the weather had been sunny, we would have loved our experience. In season I would recommend it, but not off season.

I had a fantastic stay at The Virginia Hotel! I had a beautiful room with a gorgeous, open balcony. The staff was friendly and the atmosphere was pleasant and serene.

I will definitely be back!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a balcony and jacuzzi tub- totally worth the extra cost!

we just returned from a great weekend at the Virginia Hotel. We booked a package which included a food/services credit that we could use at any of their properties, which was very nice. we ate dinner at the beach shack the first nite, which was alot of fun; party atmosphere right across from the beach. we had lunch and mother's day breakfast at the blue pig tavern at congress hall which is just beautiful. dinner saturday nite was enjoyed at the ebbitt room. they treated us to free champagne to celebrate our anniversary; a very nice touch. the inn is lovely; staff very helpful..you certainly can't beat the location. we will definitely be back!!

Sometimes when you get it right the first time, you don't trust your instincts and think there must be better alternatives. Wrong, we have returned to the warm bosom of the Virginia after trying others. Don't go anywhere else. You can't beat the location, level of service, excellent dining and sheer wonderful ambience. Forget about those places with funny names.

Room Tip: Ask for a king bed room-they are very comfy.

While the hotel itself is nice, we stayed in the Grey cottage, which was less than we expected. The 2nd bedroom is tiny, but has a large bathroom, the large bedroom has a ridiculous bathroom.
Its a bit run down - not at all what I expected. But the location is fantastic and the staff is great, too.

We stayed in the Pink Cottage which is part of the Virginia Hotel properties. The room was nicely done and had all the amenities that you need in a bed an breakfast and even added features. The bar made the best bourbon manhattan and the bar food is a conversation starter. Breakfast was brought to our room on a tray and was a very generous continental breakfast with homemade breads and yogurt. The location is ideal 1 block from the downtown mall and the beach - so once you are there you won't need a car.
