This hotel was listed as a 2-star, so we didn't expect opulence. But for $170/night it was a bit shabby.

The door to our room opened onto an outdoor hallway, so we really couldn't relax outside the room like we could have had it been a balcony. The room had a little fridge and a stove, but no coffee pot.

We didn't notice the bad, musty smell that some people complained about, but that may vary depending on which room you're in.

The pool was pretty nice - there was no lack of lounge chairs. In fact, you have to keep tripping over them to walk around the pool. They had a DJ who blasted schmaltzy classic rock and Beach Boys-type stuff. The music was OK, but way too loud.

We did hear a lot of people around the pool complaining that the rooms that they got were nothing like the ones they had reserved. Our room was pretty much what we thought it would be, but it wasn't ready on time. We had to wait an extra 1.5 hours for it, which was no fun with a cranky toddler. They did let us check out an hour late though.

The staff was fairly friendly, but all in all for that kind of money we prefer La Mer or the Montreal Inn.

BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Just returned from what was supposed to be a nice weekend away. We paid for 2 nights and only stayed 1 due to the disgusting smell coming from the air conditioner that smelled like mold and urine. We called the front desk numerous times and noone came to check it out. We asked to be moved and were told "sorry, no other rooms available". We checked out a day early because noone felt comfortable there with that horrific smell and we were told "Sorry, no refunds". For almost $1000 for the weekend we definately feel robbed. We were told we had a two bedroom townhouse that turned out to be a small kitchen/den with pullout and upstairs 1 tiny room with two beds stuffed in it. This was not a two bedroom, it was a 2 bed room. Very deceiving when you were told 6 people would have more than enough space. It felt like you were sleeping in an old attic. This place was in need of everything, it was run down and old. The pool area was okay, but who cares when you cringe at the thought of returning to your room. Take your $402.00 a night and run far, far, far away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We just returned from our 4 night stay at the Grand. This was our second stay in 5 years. It was only a matter of minutes before all the negatives about this hotel came flooding back. (just like labor pains, a few years pass, you forget how much it hurts and have another!) The unfriendly staff, no one greets you as you pass. The back elevator that still breaks down every day. By the way how hard would it be to paint the old handrails inside the elevators? The DISGUSTING astroturf outside of our sundeck room. Inside the room we had no door on our freezer and found it totally defrosted into the pan below, that we had to empty. We notified the desk. They said they would send up maintenance to look(we had brought some items from home that needed refrigeration.) Fort-five minutes later we called back to see if they would arrive soon and were told no one would be in till 9am. Needless to say no one came by for the rest of our trip.
I understand that this is the shore but the uncontrollable dampness in the rooms was gross. The air conditioning needs a huge overhaul with some major dehumidifiers installed. It took one of my sons bathing suits 4 day to dry. The real problem with this is the mold growth that occurs. Not just a little, but three dimensional. Mold colonies. On the ceiling tiles, on the carpet,on the return registers. This is totally uncalled for and totally unhealthy. These things should be replaced or washed with a bleach solution. We actually started to feel sick by the end of our trip. Sure it was great to see the new light fixtures being installed in the lobby, but what a farce that is ,as soon as you get inside the door of one of these efficiencies it is another story. Put some $$ into renovating and cleaning up the mold in the rooms!
There was some improvement to the indoor pool area athough we didn't use it.
We planned this trip only one week in advance and this was the only room we could find with an outdoor pool. We really tried to get into the LaMer which just put on a beautiful new addition that was not ready to be occupied the week we were there. Do yourself a favor and take your $270 and run, don't walk ,down the street to La Mer. They even have a great new restaraunt that serves a wonderful breakfast for the same price as the dark and dingy Ballyho's restaraunt at the Grand. We can definitely say never again. I'd rather stay home.

I brought my family for a short getaway and decided on the Grand Hotel because of positive feedback from friends. The place was beautifully landscaped with the beach right in front for the children to play, the 2 pools were open and very clean. The staff was very accomodating and helped us with ideas on sights to see and things to do. The food at their restaurant, Ballyhoo's was fantastic. I would highly recommend this Hotel to any family wanting to get away as it is 1 of the few with large suites and a wonderful staff. Denise

My husband & I were just married in Cape May and had both our rehearsal dinner & our reception at the Grand Hotel in Cape May. Since we have made many dinner dates at the Ballyhoo’s restaurant & bar in the hotel because of their superb cuisine, having our reception there was ideal to us. Our guests found the hotel very inviting and most stayed there for the weekend.

Our reception was in the beautiful Penthouse Ballroom on the top floor. Our wedding was romantic and spectacular!!! The room was breathtaking as it overlooked both the ocean & town of Cape May. My guests have been raving to me about the phenomenal food, the friendly service and inviting rooms. I have even heard, “That was the best food I have ever had at a wedding!”

If you are looking for a night to stay, a night out or planning a banquet in Cape May, the Grand Hotel is the best place in Town!!! I highly recommend this wonderful hotel, banquet facilities and dining to everyone!

I included some pictures of our glorous day.

I've stayed at the Grand Hotel in Cape May, NJ many times over the last several years. The hotel is continually being renovated. There are different types of room options. We last stayed in the townhouse-type with a bedroom/bath upstairs (2 double bed and pull-out couch) and kitchen, living room (pull-out couch) and bath downstairs. It was perfect for our family to put the kids to bed and relax in the living room. Balcony looks out to beach. The hotel is right across from the beach. It has a large outdoor and indoor pool with hottub. The indoor pool came in handy on our one rainy day - it was a lifesaver. Restaurant/bar in hotel is excellent - good food for the whole family. The all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet can't be beat, omelets made to order. It's a great family resort.

The newly renovated lobby is great, the staff are friendly and it is best place that I ever stayed in Cape May. We had a wonderful time with our family swimming in the indoor and outdoor pool. The brunch at the Ballyhoo is the best I have ever had. We can't wait to go there again.
