“Return to a great hotel with a SAUNA”
Reviewed July 5, 2011

We stayed here several times a few years ago and returned this year after a hiatus. The rate was good esp. given the nice quality of the room with oceanview balcony and the pool; staff was friendly and accommodating. The fitness room was nice with restrooms and showers and there was a GREAT SAUNA! Also the common area sun deck has a ping-pong table, shuffleboard and 3-hole minigolf -- good to keep the kids busy. Location is great right on the beach-- and included in the rate are beach tags for everyone as well as two chaises at the beach. They allow you to use the pool and parking space the day you check out and they have a restroom and shower that guests can use after they check out. A really nice stay for families with kids or even with teenagers.

Room Tip: The first floor is a little "busy"

The Montreal Inn provides a consistent, reliable and courteous experience for all visitors seeking a memorable ocean-front experience at competitive rates, The staff is professional and courteous, and the rooms are always very clean and secure. As well , the Montreal strives to provide full value for its guests by including such amenities as beach passes and beach lounge-chairs at no extra cost to its guests. Parking is more than ample and the Inn offers both lounge and restuarant facilities right on premises. In sum, The Montreal Inn is an ideal choice for anyone seeking a memorable ocean-front stay at a facility run by a team that always tries to "deliver what they promise".

We make an annual trip to Cape May and until this visit we always enjoyed ourselves immensely. Lesson learned - accommodations can make or break your vacation. We will not be staying at the Montreal Inn ever again.

Upon arrival, the swarms of unsupervised children running amock all over the hotel gave us cause for concern. Then we were told that smoking is not permitted in the rooms (which we expected based on the website) nor on your private balcony (this was news as it is not stated on the website). Their policies meant that if we left to a better suited hotel, we would still be liable for the full cost of the rental at Montreal Inn - so we were trapped. Then we saw the room and were so disappointed - it was much less than we expected.

We rented the Meridian Suite, touted as being " a uniquely appointed one bedroom suite, efficiency kitchen, comfortable living room and balcony. Three sided panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean." It is very a small suite and quite uncomfortable - one chest of drawers, one nightstand, no shelves in the bathroom to hold toiletries... To enjoy the "panoramic view" means losing privacy to those on the beach and walking by. The verticle blinds are ill fitted and did not close properly.

Housekeeping was lackluster. On our first morning we found that the pots and dishes in the room were dirty and had a greasy film. We dropped an olive seed on the kitchen floor and two days later is was still there behind the small waste basket, even after a regular visit from housekeeping. Bathroom tissue appears to be a commodity - each time we needed a roll we had to go to the office to request it. We did, however, enough towels for a family of 6 - many more than 2 people could possibly use in a day.

Montreal Inn claims to be "Cape May's Most Accommodating Inn." Their policiies contradict this statement. We seldom saw staff, except housekeeping and the pool cleaner in the morning, unless we went into the office, which we did frequently to get a roll of bathroom tissue. Check-in is at 2:00 pm, guaranteed by 4:00 pm - what does this mean? We arrived after 2:00 and our room was not ready until almost 4:00.

Unsupervised children have the run of this hotel - they dominate the pool, run around in the stairwells and, yes, your private balcony, while parents do who knows what. While we were there, they played softball in the parking lot without supervision or regard for the cars and those walking past. Where was the hotel's staff? They blocked corridors and access to rooms with balcony furniture - where were the adults while they were moving the furniture around? Where was the hotel's staff? Had we known this, we would not have booked here.

Unlike many of the Cape May hotels and B&Bs, at this hotel smokers are relegated to stand in the hot, almost-always-sunny, parking lot. "No smoking in rooms" means just that does not imply that smoking is prohibited on the balcony. This should be stated on their website, or is that they don't believe smoker's have standards? Had we known this, we would not have booked here.

Beach service is limited to two chairs per room and waiter service from the restaurant. If you want an umbrella, you pay extra. Unlike other hotels that adverstise beach service, they do not provide towels. Had we known this, we would not have booked here.

One more thing, bright lights throughout the exterior of the hotel remain on all night and shine into the suite.

Our adventure began when we checked in to find out that Expedia had cancelled our reservation for no reason. The hotel staff informed us that they were booked and could not accommodate us for the 2 nights we desired, but had one room for the night. They graciously gave us the room without the weekend surcharge, exclaiming "You have been through enough punishment." They contacted the chamber and asked to be notified if there were any cancelations in town for Saturday, as the entire town was booked for the weekend. They put us on a priority list in case of a cancellation. Someone did cancel and we moved to our new room, again for the regular weekday rate. I have to say that I am more than pleased with the extent to which the crew at the front desk went to accommodate us. I would highly recommend this hotel simply due to the care and attention we received. I would also say it was very high in quality and was impressed with the rooms, the view, and the amenities.

This was the first time in years we had stayed at The Montreal Inn. We had gone to The Atlas Inn many times before it was sold, in the end mainly due to the free breakfast that was offered. We stayed on the Third Floor in a two room suite, which was not one of the newly renovated rooms, but was clean and well kept and, of course, the private balcony looking out over the ocean! The service was exceptional and Larry (the Owner/Manager) could be seen endlessly walking around the property making sure everything was well maintained. When I said hello and introduced him to my family he was very gracious. Looking forward to next year for which we have already booked an efficiency in a room which will then be renovated and make the experience even more enjoyable.

By the way, Harry's Bar & Grill had wonderful food and service and entertainment on the weekends. I just wished that Happy Hour started at Four instead of Five and that they had some of the "specials" on the menu as they did last year when Harry's opened.

All in all, a wonderful experience! I would recommend it highly!

I've stayed at the Montreal Inn many times over the years and they've never disappointed me! From a visit by myself years ago where I had a small room to my honeymoon in 2007 to trips with my family... never had any complaints. The hotel is very accomodating and is in the process of renovating all the rooms.

We had one of the rooms that had not yet been renovated, but there was still fresh paint on the walls and everything was in good working order. It'd easy to see all over the property that the owners take a lot of pride in what they do and they pay attention to the details. I believe that's a big difference with a hotel like the Montreal where the owners are on the premesis every day and another hotel that is merely an investment property for someone who lives out of town.

Our mattresses were new and extremely comfortable, the coffee maker with free coffee was a nice touch and that heated pool with built-in spa was just what I needed. I came to the Montreal Inn stressed out of my mind and left feeling wonderful!

We came into town for a wedding and were advised to stay at the Montreal Inn. We loved the location, the hotel amenities and the courtesy of the staff. We did, however, encounter an inconvenience during our stay and brought it to the attention of the hotel owner, who is on-site and very approachable. He took care of the problem and we were once again happy guests and very willing to return to Cape May as a vacation destination.
