“Fantastic, Friendly, Fun and Relaxing”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 12, 2005

We stayed at The Summer Cottage Inn the first week in April of 2005. I found the cottage to beautifully decorated in antique furnishings. We had the Harrison Cottage Room on the third floor. A nicely decorated large room with a sitting area and the dresser was my favorite part. The mirror went across the back, stuck out on the sides and went down towards the floor. We were right across from the pantry, this made it convienent for us to keep our cold drinks in. The breakfast was great, we ate so much we had to skip lunch. At 3:30 they served us tea and some sweets. I found the old house to be so peaceful and relaxing, just the reason I had taken the time off for. Everyone was so nice and friendly we mostly liked that they would take time out of their busy day to talk to us and we left feeling as though we had made new friends. New friends that I plan on returning back to The Summer Cottage Inn just to see how they are. Give it a try, you aren't taking any chances on this one. It's great!!

You got to read this review! My wife Maureen and I went there April 2, 2005 for our twenty-eighth wedding anniversary. We opened the old wooden storm door and felt like we walked into the 1800’s. The parlor had a burning fire in the fireplace. The antique red velvet couch sat on one of four handmade Kerman rugs. There were potted spring flowers sitting on the marble antique table. On each side of the fireplace there were very old pictures of children. They had no smile and were so properly posed on their chairs for their photographer. You could grab a book or two if from the built in bookcases and just sit there by the fireplace if you wanted. That room was so inviting and warm.
In the front of the home was a what I would call a music room. It had an old piano and a wind up victrola. More great antique pictures, a display of old crystal glass and a dressmaker’s form with an antique dress on it. You could grab a chocolate from one of a few candy dishes if you wanted. Kind of reminds me of visiting grandmothers house when I was young. I would sure clean her out of candy before I left her house. I could go on and on about the antiques that the new owners decorated with but I want to tell you about the new owners.
We were there for only a short time before we met Donna. Donna just took over the Summer Cottage Inn about two years ago. By this time I was ready to be greeted by a woman dressed in lace and a hoop type skirt. I was brought back to reality when she appeared and asked if we were the ones that made the reservation and will it be cash or charge. What? Charge cards in the 1800’s? Donna introduced us to her helper Debbie. Our friendship began!
To make a real long store short Donna and Debbie were the friendliest, most helpful, polite, personable people we have ever met. We told them ahead of our dietary needs and the breakfasts and afternoon teas on the front porch couldn’t be more designed for us. The houses were lined up straight. One could only wonder what it was like in those days looking down the row of pouches as you sipped you peach Snappel (no just kidding) tea trying to be just a little more sophisticated than you neighbor.
If you have never been to a bed and breakfast, try it. If you have or have ever been disappointed try this place. We enjoyed the area, the restaurants, the breakfasts the sites, and most of all, the owner Donna and her sidekick Debbie. We stayed an unscheduled extra day and, because we were running out of spending money we only ate Acme sandwiches on the way home but it was worth it.

My husband and I stayed at the Summer Cottage Inn for our 25th anniversary this past summer. Our accomodations at the inn were very comfortable. Our bathroom was on two levels, was was unique. The was a small kitchen on the top floor for snacks with a refrig., which we kept our leftovers in. We really enjoyed riding the bicycles provided by the inn all over Cape May. The breakfast was good, the price was very very inexpensive compared to other places- and we researched most of the inns in Cape May, trust me! The location of the inn was perfect- right in the historic district. We sat out front on the swing for a long time watching people walk by and the horse drawn carriage clopping by. It was a very beautiful place to mark 25 years of marriage. We highly recommend it. Also, plan to eat at the Washington Inn. It is the finest fine dining available!

Great, clean B&B with a new owner who is just as lovely as the incredible ambiance of this perfect home. Charming, clean, spacious and a perfect place close (but not too close) to the beaches and town.

My husband and I have made the Summer Cottage Inn our annual wedding anniversary getaway. We have been there three times thus far, and find it to be the most relaxing and romantic place to retreat to. The Inn is clean, well-kept and tastefully decorated. The breakfasts are delicious, and afternoon tea with freshly-baked cookies on the porch is a nice touch. The location is wonderful, as we have spent many evenings sharing a glass of wine on the front porch watching the horse and buggies peacefully trot by on the gaslit streets. We are walking distance to everything, and love to borrow the bikes and ride around town in the fresh morning air after breakfast. There is a nice fireplace in the main entrance that we have found to be a cozy setting on cooler nights. The absence of public media, i.e. television, radio, etc. is a welcome escape! We are so impressed we've recommended the Inn to our friends and family.

The Summer Cottage Inn was a pretty home right on Columbia Avenue. Overall we enjoyed our stay.
Big plus -- free bikes to take out to explore the town. Nice sized room...and even though the idea was to get away from it all, we actually really missed not having a TV; the clock radio that was supplied didn't tune properly and when it did tune it was at the most minimal of volume that you had to put your ear up to it to listen. The male innkeeper was friendly and spent time socializing with the guests. The female innkeeper we would rate as totally unfriendly and never came out to talk or say hello. The breakfasts were nice, however, if you are on a diet or believe in healthful eating, this is not the breakfast for you. Don't bother requesting skim milk for your cereal...they don't have it and expressed no interest in having it the next day to accomodate you. The biggest disappointment, and the one reason we would not go back or strongly recommend this B&B to others was something that happened during check out.
We turned in our key to the innkeeper and said goodbye. Didn't think anything of it at all until the couple who walked out behind us whispered to us how nice it was to get a gift certificate upon checkout and showed us their certificate. They had just received it from the innkeeper only moments after we checked out. We don't know why we were discriminated against, and decided it wasn't worth it to go back and find out why, but they seem to play favorites at this B&B and only want a certain type is welcome to come back and visit.
