This was our first time in a bed and breakfast and were not sure if it was for us, but we were very pleasantly surprised.
I chose the Wicker Garden Room which is located in the rear of the house and has it's own entrance, which was perfect for us as we didn't want to disturb anyone when we came in late and vice versa. There is also a small porch attached to the room with chairs and a small table where we enjoyed drinks, and my boyfriend enjoyed his cigars. Motion lights located on the path around the house were very nice when arriving home after dark. Would loved it if the garden was landscaped a little nicer, but that may have been due to it being the end of summer and flowers dying off.
The room and bathroom are rather small but worked fine for the two of us for a two-night stay. If we were staying longer it might not have worked so well. The breakfasts were good. I am not an egg eater, but their were also muffins and breads to chose from. Afternoon cookies, ice tea and lemonade were a pleasant treat after an afternoon nap. Patrick was also extremely helpful prior to and during our stay.
Did not explore the rest of the house, so I can't say what the other rooms were like, but we had a lovely trip and would stay in this b&b and room again.

  • Liked — Privacy, not needing to enter the home to access our room.
  • Disliked — smallish bathroom

Summer Cottage Inn is a great B&B - This is our third time staying there and it was the best time we've had. Patrick and the staff provide a comfortable and friendly environment while serving top-notch breakfasts and treats. We can't wait to go back next summer and are considering a fall trip.

This was the third time my wife and I stayed in Cape May, and the third B and B we decided to try. We didnt want to spend a mint this time around, and we ended up spending $125 a night for the Garden Wicker Room in the back of the inn. We had an outside entrance around the side of the inn which we liked. The room was small but decently decorated but the bathroom was probably too small for most people. We liked having our own porch but the garden could have used some better landscaping. Upon arrival we were greeted by the owner and introduced to the innkeeper, and both were friendly. My favorite part was a good selection for breakfast and we could help ourselves-- at the other two B and B's we stayed at we had to sit and be served with little choice if the selection. The stay included free use of beach chairs, towels, and bicycles like many inns at Cape May, and the owner allowed us to use them and the outside shower even after we checked out on our final day. So far, I think we liked this inn he best out of the 3 we have stayed at.

  • Liked — Breakfast, private entrance, superfast internet access, close to beach and shopping
  • Disliked — Room small, TV in room small, bathroom small

Stayed here with family while we were in town for a wedding. My room wasn't quite ready at check in time, but the staff let me change in one of the vacant rooms. Nice sized rooms, my parents had a claw foot tub, my room had a stand up shower. The beds were very high and very comfortable. We weren't able to fully avail ourselves of the breakfast, but everything looked delicious.

The after hours combo lock on the door is a bit complicated, a practice run before we left for the evening would have been a good idea.

  • Liked — Great location, lovely Victorian features
  • Disliked — Our room wasn't ready at check in time.

I had to work down in Cape May for a week (tough break!), and was lucky enough to find the Summer Cottage Inn!!! I explained that I'd be working, and that meant getting up early every morning. Jean, the Innkeeper, was sweet enough to come early every day so I could have breakfast! (Incredible in this day and age!) She was friendly and helpful, and always on the go!
My husband and son came down on Fri. night, and they loved the place, too. It is charming Victorian and comfortable--not the kind of place where you're afraid to sit down on the chairs! We loved relaxing on the porch, playing Uno in the parlor, and had a great bike ride with the bikes the B&B lends its guests. The chocolate chip cookies set out as snacks one night were a huge hit, and I especially loved the baked pancakes Jean served for breakfast one morning.
We also got to meet the owner over the weekend, and she was very friendly, relaxed and willing to chat with her guests.
All in all, we had a great time, and we cannot wait to go back to Cape May and stay at the Summer Cottage Inn!
As for some of the reviews I read where people complained, maybe if they had said "hello" first, or started a conversation, things would have been a little different! As for us, we loved both the privacy and the friendliness of the staff!

  • Liked — Comfort, privacy and the breakfasts!
  • Disliked — Originally had a bad mattress, but the innkeeper switched it for me!

The location of the Summer Cottage Inn couldn't be better - one block walk to the beach and about two blocks to the pedestrian shopping area. The Inn is spotlessly clean and the staff provide the best service because it's "invisible" - everything is done quickly and quietly with special touches and extra service everywhere. The rooms are wonderfully decorated and comfortable - and very clean. The large parlour is a fabulous gathering place, and there is also a smaller sitting area near the fire place. The Summer Cottage Inn is a cozy and comfortable place.
Breakfasts were delicious and plentiful, and a wonderful variety of choices were offered.
We were guests for New Year's Weekend with another couple and being able to walk everywhere was a big plus. The town was bustling with activity and there were plenty of options for parties. The Summer Cottage Inn is a place where we will definately return.
