“Great place for a quiet, beautiful anniversary weekend”
Reviewed November 22, 2003

The luxury and splendor of an 1800's mansion set in Cape May with modern conveniences. The grounds are beautiful, even in the winter (especially at Christmas). This is the only place to stay in Cape May (or the whole shore) and once there, you do not need to leave. However, should you decide to venture out, everything is just a short walk away.
The afternoon tea time is refreshing and the breakfasts are terrific.
Great for young couples (we are 30) and older as well. Great service, huge rooms, quiet evenings, warm fireplaces and attentive, but unobtrusive staff.

The Southern Mansion was BEAUTIFUL. The landscaping was BEAUTIFUL.The employees were very friendly and helpful. The wonderful gentleman who helped us to our room even got us a map out and pointed out the places of interest. The only thing I did not like was that the room had a tapping noise every once in a while in the middle of the night. We thought it to be a leaky facet but never found out what it was. Besides that I would recommend it to everybody.....Thanks to the Mansion for a relaxing vacation.

Recently stayed at the Southern Mansion for a special anniversary.
Hadn't been there before but was talked into an expensive suite on the phone by the Mansion staff. Upon arriving at 2:40 in the afternoon, we had to ring the front door bell several times and was finally greeted by a staff person who seemed very flustered. We were waved in and were surprised to see that there was no one else at the front desk, we thought perhaps it was a busy time checking everyone in. We inquired about where to leave our car (they have 15 min parking for registering guests and more long term parking on the property) and were basically chastised for "skipping ahead" in the check-in process by the front desk clerk. The simple answer was " yes, you can leave your car there." Having stayed in other B&B's, we are used to a warm welcoming atmosphere, but this was not the case. We were shown to our room, up a steep staircase. It was a duplex suite. The clerk left. We went up a spiral staircase to the loft where there was a mattress and boxspring on the floor and you couldn't stand up because of dormer ceilings.
There was no headboard so your pillow fell off the back of the bed all night. The bathroom was on the first floor. We inquired into changing but were informed that there were no rooms available the following night and so, even if we changed rooms the first night, we'd be back in this room the second night. We didn't want to pack up and move around twice so we stayed. At breakfast, the staff was young, not very friendly and territorial. I saw one guest ask for ketchup and the server said "you'll have to ask your waiter for it". Every time we passed the front desk they were on the phone, so we couldn't ask for dinner suggestions or other help. Upon checkout, the clerk was again on the phone and just took our key without another word. You go to the Southern Mansion the first time for the opulent real estate, but we won't return due to the lack of customer service.
