“Quiet and relaxing.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2012

A very good B&B. Quiet and relaxing. There was not a wedding or other large activity during our stay, so that may be a factor. Convenient walk to Cape May restaurants, shopping and downtown attractions (e.g., carriage and trolley rides). The beach is a little further but still not a bad walk. Very good service (rooms and breakfast). The general access doors require a combination and are tricky to use when carrying items (e.g., luggage). Have stayed here before, will stay again. Caters to a more mature clientele.

Room Tip: First floor rooms in the new wing have an enclosed patio, good for relaxing in hot or inclement weat...

I was excited to stay at the Southern Mansion given all of the exceptional reviews, however we had a terrible experience and it was way overpriced. I would expect so much more for a $300 per night hotel regardless of the number of nights you stay.

My husband and I wanted to celebrate our three year anniversary in Cape May. We saw wonderful reviews about the Mission Inn and decided to book a couple nights here and one night at the Southern Mansion because The Mission Inn did not have availability the other night. After comparing reviews, one would think that the T.S.M. would be better than the T.M.I. Not the case one bit... First, as soon as we walked in the stench of urine was so overpowering one would think the bathroom hadn't been cleaned in decades!! Gross!

I work with people and would never treat one customer better than the other although that was vibe both me and my husband got from the less than welcoming staff. Did everyone know we were staying one night not four? It felt like we were bothering them by arriving although they were super friendly to the guests (staying a week) arriving while we were checking out.

We noticed a lot of cheesy print outs about Ghost Hunters filming there and tours to see the "ghosts". The staff walked around like they were working in the Haunted Mansion ride in Disney World. It was comical after a while.

Finally we were escorted to our $300 room which neighbored a public restroom. We heard every flush and smelled odor seeping out of the bathroom all night...

We decided to walk everywhere to really absorb all Cape may has to offer, not to mention walking off our meals ;) We are just about to walk to dinner, which was two blocks away from the Mansion, and it started to rain. We asked the receptionist if we could borrow one of the (many) umbrellas sitting in the foyer that were clearly labeled 'The Southern Mansion'. She said we could buy one for $20. We then responded with a 'no thanks' and just about turned away before her better judgement kicked in. The receptionist stopped us and said we could borrow one. Free of charge. What hospitality! This was almost as tacky as the robe hanging in the bathroom priced $20. Thanks, we didn't touch it!

I will end with the food. It tasted like they picked something up from the frozen food section in the supermarket... Eggos... $300 per night.

Lets put it this way, if we would have stayed here after staying at the Mission Inn we would have gone home.

Theresa,we are truly saddened to read your review. We take a huge amount of pride in keeping our property impeccable. Every floor is scrubbed every day by hand and all bathrooms are scrubbed and disinfected 2x daily. After reading your negative review we carefully checked your file. Unfortunately you never let anyone at the mansion either front desk, server , house keeping, or manager know you had any problem, complaint or any a real concern We truly wish you let us know that you had concerns as we would have solved any problem immediately! Customer service and satisfaction is our number one concern. We would have gone out of our way to correct any problem or even upgraded and moved your room. The room is cleaned with a natural organic citrus cleaner (is it possible you mistook that for something else?) and we are very well known for the super cleanliness of the property. We immediately had the room re-checked when we saw your review and there was no bad odor what so ever. The room was in fact extremely clean. Our manager actually checked you in and said you had seemed completely happy and had no complaint. We also do not even have waffles on the menu so your comment about "eggos" is completely confusing since all our breakfasts are fresh, completely home made and our guests rave about them. If you had not been satisfied with your meal choice you would have been happily offered another entree. I also see the actual room charge was $250 not $300 . We truly go out of our way to be incredibly kind to all our guests not just some, and certainly not based on the length of their stay. It is extremely important to us that you are happy ! Please contact Denise the General manager as we would like to resolve this issue immediately! Thank you!

We stayed at The Southern Mansion for our one-year anniversary. The place is beautiful with stunning perennial gardens. The grounds are expansive, and though we stayed in a "smaller" room, it was still large and nicely furnished. Good breakfast in the morning with a cold display and hot food cooked to order. The B & B also provides ice tea, coffee, tea, lemondade throughout the day.

The beach is within walking distance and is about a 5-10 minute walk from The Southern Mansion. The shops and restaurants are also within walking distance, and The Southern Mansion recommended two very good restaurants: Tisha's and The Mad Batter. Both were excellent and not very expensive. Tisha's was Bring Your Own Wine/Beer.

The Southern Mansion is excellent for couples or adults. It is not very kid-friendly. There is no pool or fitness center.

My son and his new wife were married at the Southern Mansion in Cape May on August 11, 2012. We could not have been happier with the services provided for our event. The check-in for our guests was smooth, the rooms were gorgeous and the grounds were absolutely beautiful for a summer garden wedding. We were so looking forward to the bride making her entrance to the ceremony walking down the spiral staircase into the garden. The weather gods were not cooperating with our plans and it rained off and on for most of the day. As the wedding time was approaching we were very nervous - but our wedding coordinator, Andreea, remained calm and collected. She worked with us until the last moment to make the bride and groom's dreams come true and we had the ceremony as planned in the Southern Mansion garden! It was fabulous! With flooding in all the surrounding shore towns due to the heavy rain we were so lucky that we were able to continue as planned. The staff was organized and efficient and the food was delicious! The breakfast that is served each morning was wonderful as well and we appreciated the assortment of beverages available throughout the day. Everyone who attended the wedding celebration raved about the event as well as the accommodations and the excellent service. We cannot thank Andreea and her staff enough for making my son's wedding a success. Be sure to check out the Southern Mansion!

The Ny.Times says this is the only place to stay in Cape May. Now we know why! Great stay all around. The property is gorgeous, location ideal, rooms magical. But it's the staff that really sets the property apart. It starts with Mgr. Denise.Extremely personable and helpful. Assistant Mgr's. Ken, Jasmine, and Rita are all equally gracious and helpful, They really made our stay a delight. Additionally, the wait staff was wonderful also. They made the gourmet breakfasts a true treat. Can't wait to go back at Christmastime. Highly recommended.

This mansion exceeded expectations. Pictures and tv dont do it justice. I was a bit skeptical with the multiple tv episodes on ghost hunters and such, but I'll get to that later. Room was very nice although being that our balcony was outside and not enclosed made it feel a little off. Breakfast was excellent and the afternoon tea was perfect. For some reason we didn't get the turn down service. Onto the overall experience. We didn't spend a lot of time in the room but I had a tough time falling asleep. On 3 occasions I heard what sounded like Marbles rolling from one side of the floor to the other. My wife heard it but didn't talk about it until after we left. We stayed in room 24 which I later found out was investigated by ghost hunters two years ago. We didn't have extreme experiences like doors opening but they had a similar experience which they called a suit case rolling across the floor. Bottom line is, I really enjoyed the stay but I also believe in ghosts which made the stay a bit nerve racking. I would definitely visit the southern mansion again but will most likely not stay there, especially room 24.

The Southern Mansion is an exceptional place to stay in a town filled with Victorian B&Bs. Outstanding breakfasts served in an attractive morning room and lovelyl public spaces that are inviting and beautifully furnished. Probably the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. The only negative is that we were on the third floor with no elevator, normally two flights is not an issue, but with such high ceilings on all floors it becomes a steeper climb. I highly recommend this establishment.
