“Lots of fun”

Cape May Whale Watch & Research Center
Reviewed August 10, 2014

This was our second trip to watch the dolphins and whales. Though we didn't see any whales on this trip, the dolphins were our in full force. We got some great pictures and were very entertained by their playfulness. They came right up to the boat and surfed in the wake as we traveled around the island.

We saw lots of dolphins and the kids really enjoyed it. Friendly staff and overall just a fun day... Plus now my wife will let me play golf tomorrow, bonus!

Although we didn't see as many whales and dolphins as I'd hoped, it's still money well spent. The staff is EXTREMELY friendly and welcoming. They're warm and they seem to genuinely want to answer your questions and explains what's happening. Melissa was very helpful and she explained things about the area, as well as the dolphins. Kathy was on the PA and she told us just enough. She could've just talked on and on and bored us, but she gave enough information to keep us interested, but not too much to put us to sleep!
The boat was a perfect size - we were easily able to go to the different sides. There are two levels, and I would recommend standing at the upper level. There are also seats and they're evenly spread out around the boat.
As for the dolphins, we didn't see one dolphin jump up and do fancy tricks, but that's not what we came for...we saw pods swimming and a few were in the wake of the boat. We didn't see a single humpback whale. They did say they saw them the day before, but we came knowing that there weren't a lot of whale sightings.
They did offer food, and they had complimentary apple juice, coffee, and donuts.
If you do decide to come, come early, though, as you can get the best seats. You also get better parking and can leave faster when the trip is over.
We did the 9:30 time, and the weather was perfect. It was slightly windy and the sun wasn't too high. Beginning of August is a great time to go!
Overall, I would definitely recommend this trip to anyone who'd like to see dolphins and have a very nice trip out on a boat!

We had a great experience as our tour took place on a sunny day and we had the great luck of seeing several pods of dolphins frolicking around our boat. That was really magical.
The tour takes you round Cape May, and back through the canal. The guide offers interesting historical and zoological information.
Pizza and hot dogs are included in the ticket price (and the children availed themselves of this), but drinks have to be paid for and are very expensive - why not include at least a free drink, or allow us to take a drink on board?). As non-Americans, we also were confused and a bit annoyed by the repeated requests by staff for tips. Considering what we had paid for the tickets, this appeared a bit excessive, but I understand that tipping is a regular issue with holidays in the USA.

To be sure, it would be hard to complain about our trip when we not only saw a humpback whale, but were able to watch it for about half an hour (we were on the three hour tour). But we had never done anything like this before so I actually think we would have been just as happy with all the dolphins we saw (which seem to be almost guaranteed in the area) as well as the birds and jellyfish. The crew were nice and the non stop narration was actually very entertaining and informative. My one caveat would be that the galley overs very few food options, none of them very enticing. And I dislike the fact they do not let you take water on board and then offer only a five dollar water bottle (reusable, but who doesn't already have a hundred of them) and then actually charge you for refills!! Come on, guys. Wasn't it enough that I was too dumb to not use the groupon so was already in it for over 130 bucks for the four of us? Another key point....it is a pretty rocky ride. Dramamine beforehand if at all possible.
