We're big time Cape May "fans" and decided to try the Blue Rose Inn for dinner one night. Our party was large, 10 people, and when making the reservation we indicated we'd like to sit outside. When we showed up, our table was ready, on the porch as requested. The porch is not closed in and there was a very bright ceiling fan light overhead. It was so bright that it literally blinded us. In addition, it also attracted a wide variety of insects, mostly large moths that would hit the light and then nosedive to the table. They were in our hair, wine glasses, on our menu etc. It got so bad we had to ask our waitress to turn the light off. Then we sat in the dark, trying to read our menus by candle light. Our server was stern and inattentive. We had to get up ourselves various times to pour more wine, open new bottles, get glasses etc. Those who did not drink wine went without beverage refills for ages. When our food finally came out, it was cold and the portions were small. The food itself was respectable, just not hot. We all ate three courses due to the small size of both appetizers and entrees. There were various times where some of us had no silverware, no glass to drink from, etc. Sugar was not brought out with the coffee...it just wasn't smooth. This place has potential, the food was definitely tasty, but when you're in the restaurant business, a smile goes a long way, and when you're in Cape May and there is a plethora of fine dining establishments, you need to bring your A game.
