Cape May has its share of great white table cloth restaurants, but this little BYOB gem can hold its own with the best of them. While a bit cramped and noisy, the happy people inside have found a place with delicious culinary creations that were expertly prepared. We started with appetizers that included tangy pecan crusted goat cheese and some of the best mussels I have ever tasted. Good thing they give you lots of bread because we all wanted to dip it into that mussel broth. Our foursome all had seafood ranging from sesame crusted ahi tuna, delicate crab cakes and two takes on scallops, all were outstanding.  The staff was very prompt, pleasant and attentive and made us feel very comfortable.  We were very glad we made reservations on a Saturday night because there was not a single empty seat in the house.  The menu changes often and we will be back again soon to see what other surprises we will find at Freda's.

We had the coconut sweet potato encrusted scallops over a bed of greens and the stuffed organic breast of chicken with mozz cheese, sun dried tomatoes, and mushrooms with a salad, fancy carrots and a side of mashed potatoes or whipped sweet potatoes. The scallops were good, but not great. The chicken platter tasted just like chicken pot pie and the carrots were undercooked. Try Tisha's located in Washington Mall.

We dined at Freda's on a Saturday evening with an 830 reservation. However, as others have noted below, the small space with limited tables might make projecting diner turnover times difficult. Ultimately, we were not seated until 9pm. In our opinion, there is too much expected of the hostess, who is also expected to clean and prepare tables. As a result, both our table and one for the other party waiting were open for at least ten minutes before we were finally seated. We were not offered an apology for the wait.

I think the service was good overall. The experience with the food was a bit uneven...

- our entrees were both over $32 and included a salad. At this price point, I would expect a nice dinner salad as an accompaniment to the meal. To say the salad was meager would be an understatement. Two or three pieces of lettuce, shaved carrots, and one tomato each. That's it. We did not receive the salads until nearly 15 minutes after we ordered.

- our entrees were both very good and are the reason for a three star versus two rating. The crab cakes are excellent with the mango salsa as a nice complement. The pork is served in a creative fashion surrounded by a puff pastry, also very good.

- this is a BYOB, which we prefer, bit we poured our own drinks throughout dinner.

At this price point, Freda's is competing with the likes of the Washington Inn, 410 Bank Street, PSI, etc. While the entrees are quite good and creative, the overall experience for us was "flat." We will not likely return.

We participated in the Cape May Food Tour. Our guide raved about Freda's. We went there for a tasting. The (small plate) food in the tasting was outstanding. We raved to the beaming waiter and promptly made a reservation later that week. Entering the restaurant the next evening we were greeted coolly by the manager or owner. (We didn't know which.) We had reservations for 6 but we were a bit early. I was there with my husband and son. The gentleman directed us to a table clearly intended for two people.(however it had additional place settings) It would have been impossible to sit all of us at this table! When we called it to the gentleman's attention we were given a cold stare. Then he directed us to a lovely table by the window and said, "You can have it until 7. Then there is another party coming in. You should have enough time" Astonishing!

We ordered and the food was very good. Unfortunately the food was overshadowed by the glowering individual. When we complimented the food we received a condescending half-smile.
Ironically the Trip Advisor award was prominently displayed on his window. I promised myself that I would write this review upon my return home. I suppose some may believe that you should overlook certain rudeness for great food. I am not one of those people.

Always eat there when we go, fabulous crab cakes! Excellent service. Only thing with restaurants we find they are always ice cold!
