“Could have been a great dining experience, but missing one key ingredient”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 10, 2010

Everything about Cucina Rosa was shaping up to be great. They seated up promptly for our Mon 8:00pm reservation. The waiter was friendly and attentive. The atmosphere on the patio was nice (outside, in the bustling Washington Square Mall). The menu was vast, offering many, if not standard, pasta, meat and fish entrees. And the kitchen turned out the meals quickly. Everything was perfect... except the food was not very good. My linguine with white clam sauce had far too much garlic, which is hard for me to say since I love garlic. And instead of whole clams they seemed to drop a few cans of minced clams on top, which loses the texture of a good clam sauce. The tomato sauce on my wife's spaghetti had little more flavor than what you get out of a jar.

It's a shame, really. Everything else about Cucina Rosa was wonderful. And maybe I'm being too harsh because I have so much great Italian food at home. But it just couldn't cut it for me.

“A Real Surprise”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 7, 2010

Stumbled upon this restaurant to have shelter from the rain at the Washington St. mall. Were we lucky to get a table! Delicious food, nice atmosphere, good service. Even had half size portions. Although it is BYOB they carry wines from local Cape May Vineyards and we had delicious wine.

“Great food, crap service/ambience”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 7, 2010

We visited this restaurant in May, June, and July. We strongly advise not going in July. It might help if you knew that we're southern-Italy-influenced home cooks. In July, this becomes very much what's known in Cape May as a MALL restaurant.

Let's start by saying that Cucina Rosa serves some of the best Italian food in South Jersey. Every dish ranges from very good to excellent. We've gone back there hoping that the experience might match the food, but...

But when you go to dinner, you expect more, finally, than good food. You expect, for starters, some sense that this is a special occasion. You don't expect to have a bus boy ask you if you're finished with a 5-minute-old appetizer, when it's barely half-finished. You don't expect a server to deliver your salad before your appetizer is finished, and you don't expect a server to ask you, half-heartedly, whether you're ready for dessert, as if to do so would be something of a phenomenon. (This while our waiter, or head server, checked in only once.) Out the door we went for an ice-cream on the Cape May mall....

Not to mention the poor behavior of other patrons in July, whose over-attentive and indulgent behavior toward their children only added to the three-courses-in-less-than-sixty-minute atmosphere. Not that the restaurant can do anything about that, but we actually witnessed them offering solace to obnoxious children, as opposed to those of us being tortured by same.

But Cucina Rosa needs some real management, clearly. Our server on two of three occasions was not happy being a server. The bus boys were atrociously aggressive and inept. And the food was excellent. This restaurant has potential. Who's running the joint?

“Absoultely wonderful Southern Italian food.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 7, 2010

The best meal of a 4 day stay in Cape May, NJ. Wonderful crusted bread served with hot peppers. Had a mild Seafood Fra Diabolo and "Brutus" Ceasar salad. This was the last of our dinner meals in Cape May. If we had gone here first, we would have eaten here more than once!

“Fresh and Delicious food at Cucina Rosa's in Cape May.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 23, 2010

We were walking in the Washington St. mall, and looked at the menu--everything looked tasty, so we made a reservation. We are very glad that we did! We both had one of the specials: I had halibut with pineapple mango salsa, and my husband had chicken portofino. We also had a special salad with pears and walnuts in a tasty vinagrette. All of the dishes were fantastic--very fresh, extremely tasty vegetables, and nice portions. The service was good, the atmosphere was nice, and the prices were fair. We really enjoyed our dinner, and will definitely return.
