Description: A Cape May tradition for over 30 years! The nationally acclaimed Mad Batter Restaurant is located at the Carroll Villa Hotel in the heart of the historic district. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, desserts and cocktails are served on the European-style front porch, garden terrace, and sky-lit dining room. Breakfast offerings include fresh squeezed juices, homemade fruit breads, and entrees such as crab benedict, oatmeal pancakes, or orange & almond french toast. Lunch entrees include the Maryland crab cake sandwich, fish & chips, and Waldorf chicken, as well as an assortment of salads. Dinner options are always inventive and the seafood is extraordinary. Entrees include award-winning jumbo lump crab cakes, juicy steaks, chicken and fresh fish specials daily. A sumptuous selection of desserts is made daily. The Mad Batter Bar features Happy Hour, 19 beers on tap, a reasonably priced wine list, and a martini list sure to please. Live music and special events are planned throughout the year.

“Best restaurant we've eaten at in Cape May”
Reviewed August 5, 2011

We’ve been eating at The Mat Batter for years, and have never been disappointed. Rather pricey, but the servings are large and the food is wonderful. Their seafood is outstanding. Anything made of crab (always my ‘acid test’ for a restaurant) is always fresh. Steaks are tender and flavorful. We’ve eaten breakfast there once, and it was delicious and huge. Reservations are essential; the restaurant is located on the first floor of The Carroll Villa Hotel, and hotel guests get free breakfast and hefty dinner discounts, so there is a built-in clientele. There are three seating areas – an open-air porch right off the sidewalk, the bar area (somewhat dark for my taste), and the “terrace.” When you reserve your seats you can request a seating area, but this is not guaranteed, at least for small parties. Most people seem to enjoy the outdoor seating area best, but my favorite room is the terrace – actually an air-conditioned indoor room facing (through the floor-to-ceiling windows) a charming, overgrown bricked-in garden area. The staff is friendly, gracious and accommodating – probably a necessity when you are serving families with children. My only criticism is the noise level. There is live music in the bar, beginning at 7 pm, every Wednesday through Saturday, and the music pretty much fills the indoor seating areas. Also, depending upon when you show up, there will probably be large family groups, which tend to get pretty loud.

“Best in Cape May!!!”
Reviewed August 4, 2011

Once again, The Mad Batter Was the best dinner and breakfast during my vacation with 6 friends. We read reviews and try top rates places in Cape May, but none in my opinion ever make it to the Mad Batter's quality of food, excellent service and fun bar. That is why I return year after year!!

“Brunch on the Porch”
Reviewed August 1, 2011

Had Sunday Brunch on the porch . People were lined up and down the street waiting for a table . Brunch was okay. Not sure if I would wait that long again .

“Exceptional brunch choices, pricey but good quality”
Reviewed July 30, 2011

We try to eat at the Mad Batter at least once a visit to Cape May, even if it is a day trip. They always have interesting menu selections, particularly breakfast/brunch creations that you do not see if many places. But if that's not your craving, there is a nice lunch menu with a variety of salads, etc. They do a very unique job with crab and other items in conjunction with egg dishes that seem to be over the top when you read about them on the menu, but come together quite nicely on the palate. They also have a nice selection of champagne based drinks to accompany your meal. We never leave disappointed or not full! Try eating in the rear area, which is closed off in the summer for the AC but still nice and bright.

“Good happy hour in pleasant surroundings.”
Reviewed July 28, 2011

Although we didn't dine at the Mad Batter, we did enjoy Happy Hour at the bar on two occasions during our stay at Cape May. The bartenders were friendly, efficient and skilled. The bar offered many selections of frozen drinks, martinis, and eight beers on tap, all half price between 4 & 6PM. Clam chowder ($6) and crab cakes ($13.25) were especially good as were the salads (about $8.)
