I had dined in this beautiful beach front mansion in previous years and found it quite enjoyable.....good food , efficient and friendly service at moderate to high prices. We returned this year to a new decor and new menu and overall found it pretetiously over priced and extremely over rated . The service was fine the food took too long ,our waiter was apologitic, when our entrees arrived they were over cooked and not up to par for the prices we were charged . We will not return!

Found on open table with relatively decent reviews, we were major league unhappy with both the atmosphere, service, and quality of food and wine.

Although the building and setting of the restaurant are exquisite, a pianist with patrons belting out off pitch melodies was not conducive to a pleasant dining experience.

The service was chaotic and bad recommendations from their local wine list (apparently they don't have a real liquor license so serve only local bad wines) began a poor evening. The fish was raw and not cooked which when pointed out to the waitress, brought only an offer of free desert. The entire evening's dining experience was tainted and I would not recommend this restaurant.

My husband and I are huge foodies. We live near a big east-coast US city that has some pretty spectacular restaurants, and we've eaten in great places when we've traveled abroad as well. We've been a bit leery of Peter Shields because the reviews on Trip Advisor haven't always always been good, but we decided it was time to give it a try. Unfortunately, we agree with everyone who has not particularly enjoyed this restaurant. To begin with, the service was so chaotic we were astonished that food actually got to the tables. There was a constant scrum of servers and busboys/girls around our table the whole time we were there. When the food did finally arrive, it was boring and bland. I ordered crab cakes, which I usually love, and I almost couldn't make myself swallow them, they were so insipid. Ditto with the English sticky toffee pudding. The Queen would have wept. This is a pity. The physical space, in a window-filled corner of a building across the street from the beach, is brilliant. And the owners, a brother and sister, were circulating through the restaurant trying to make sure guests were happy. Could they not see that their staff was almost crashing into one another? Had they not tasted the dishes on the menu? Quite a mystery.

We first dined at Peter Shields two years ago and had a wonderful overall dining experience. We were seated at a corner table in the main dining room. The food was memorably delicious and the water was delightful and engaging. This trip, we couldn't wait to go again and scheduled it for our last night at Cape May. Everything about it was a disappointment. We were seated in the enclosed porch with the air conditioner blowing directly us. The waiter spoke a heavily accented English that was difficult to understand, was scarcely in our dining room, overlooked our request for more butter and, we learned as we listened to the waiter at the next table, neglected to tell us about specials. The food was not anywhere near as good as it had been a couple of years ago. I had the stuffed lobster tail ($49). Frankly, I had the same dish two days earlier at a lesser priced restaurant ($34) and it was better there. Peter Shields is probably the most expensive restaurant at Cape May. Two years ago we thought it was well worth it. Not this time. For the money, one would expect a superior dining experience.

Food and atmosphere was nice. Elegant summer place. Service by waitress was great. Summer help needs training. Well done.
