Owner description: Birding By Boat from Cape May. We run eco-tours of Cape May Harbor and the coastal salt marsh with up close views of local wildlife. We see many Osprey, migrating shorebirds, herons and egrets, nesting colonies of gulls and terns and many other species as we cruise through the tranquil back bays. Evening trips have the added beauty of sunset along with a local heron rookery. Come join us on one of these special trips.

We hadn't heard about this boat trip, and even though we had limited time in Cape May area it was highly recommended to us by the local birders. We were not disappointed. Great views of Osprey, plus other seabirds and shorebirds, and a good view of Clapper Rail. There was a knowledgeable bird guide on board who pointed out birds we would have missed. The boat was comfortable and there wasn't a dull moment on board. Highly recommended to other nature lovers.

We really enjoyed our birding adventure by boat. Our guide was very knowledgeable and helpful.
We were on the boat from 6-8:30 (longer than anticipated) and our guide pointed many bird species, among other interesting bird trivia. He really enjoys his job. We used a coupon so it
cost $23, per person. He lent us excellent binoculars and bird guides. Snacks and drinks are also. Bathroom on board.
available for purchase. It's a pontoon type motor boat with a roof and windows which were very helpful since it was quite windy. It's a different kind of adventure.

FYI-if you arrive when the fishing boats come in, you will see the day's catch at Miss Chris's pier. Be aware, some of it is gruesome as they are cutting up the day's catch. Lots of blood and guts which was a real turn off to me. YUCK!

Even if you are not a committed birder, here is a wonderful way to explore the salt flats of Cape May for a couple of hours. Bags of binoculars are provided, and there is a bathroom on the boat. It's kind of an unimpressive looking flat bottom boat, but an intimate way to travel. There are cushion lined benches along the windows, and a center isle bench. The windows slide open for better viewing and you can also go out the doors to stand at the back. Ospreys on nests, lots of breeding plumaged loons, oystercatchers, sandpipers, plovers and lots more, all pointed out in excitement by the two man crew we had that day. An absolute must. This is the real Cape May - do yourself a favor and don't spend it just shopping and eating. There is a senior citizen discount. Good for all ages.

We took the cruise on Fri, May 10 at 1:30 - the captain and the naturalist were both really knowledgable, and also entertaining. The stuffed loon mascot was cool to have along. We ID'd many birds, including real-life loons, black-bellied plovers, lots and lots of ospreys, and many more. We went out to the Cape May Harbor and saw ships, boats, USCG cutters, and industrial sites, and went to wetlands where there was no sign of anything "human" except us. It was by far the best thing we did on our visit from Baltimore to Cape May, which was overall very good.

The Osprey is a smallish, flat bottom boat dwarfed by the bigger tour boats surrounding it at the dock. At first glance, it's not very impressive, and one might look with envy at the giant boat next door. Once you get going, though, it's apparent that the little boat will not disappoint. We went out onto the main waterway at first, then turned around and I thought, "Is that it? We're going back?" Nope! We went along the edges to look at the nesting birds on the jetty and sea walls and then skimmed around in the salt marsh that we usually only get a look at from afar. It was really neat to walk on the marsh and see it up close and personal. The captain and his assistant were clearly familiar with the area birds and told us all sorts of interesting facts.
It was a gorgeous mid fall day and perfect for chugging around the wetlands to look for migrating birds. Open all the windows to catch a breeze and realize how sweet and beautiful the natural world is.
