Owner description: Naval Air Station Wildwood Foundation is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to restore Hangar #1 at the Cape May Airport, Cape May County, New Jersey, into an aircraft museum honoring the Navy airmen who died while training during World War II. Hangar # 1 was listed onto the National Register of Historic Places in September of 1997. Naval Air station (NAS) Wildwood was commissioned on April 1, 1943. The site served as an active dive-bomber squadron training facility from 1943 to 1945. Aircraft stationed at NAS Wildwood included TBM Avengers, Douglas Dauntlesses, Vought Corsairs and Curtiss Helldivers. Forty-two airmen perished while training at NAS Wildwood during World War II. In June 1997, NASW Foundation purchased Hangar #1 at the Cape May Airport. The 92,000 square-foot all-wooden structure was in a state of disrepair and required extensive renovation. Under the stewardship of NASW Foundation, the hangar was listed on the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places at the National Significance Level. NAS Wildwood Aviation Museum now boasts over 26 aircraft displays as well as exhibits of military memorabilia, engines, photographs and more. Additionally, the Franklin Institute of Philadelphia has provided NAS Wildwood with a wealth of interactive exhibits that allow visitors to discover the science of flight. The museum also features a library, food vending area as well as a recently expanded gift shop. In its role as a community resource, NAS Wildwood Aviation Museum regularly hosts activities including fly-ins, aviation festivals, big band concerts, swing dances, veterans’ ceremonies, historical lectures, school field trips and senior tours.

“What a great experience this Labor Day Weekend”
Reviewed September 6, 2013

This weekend they had there annual WWII aircraft. They had three really cool aircraft including a P-51 Mustang. We enjoyed the history and stories being told be several of the retired airman. What we found really cool is that one couple had their grandfather there that flew in one of the bombers. He was telling stories of where he sat and the mission he flew. His stories even amazed the current pilot of the aircraft and offered him a flight. The entire attraction was great and the other aircraft they have are really cool. This is a hidden treasurer along the southern tip of NJ and one worth seeing on a sunny day or rainy as most of the aircraft are indoors.

“A HUGE SURPRISE!”
Reviewed September 6, 2013

Living in OC for 19 years and never visiting this museum was not good. What a fantastic place to go for a few hours at any age. Great pictures, movie and wonderful plane exhibits. A definite must see for anyone in the area. We will definitely be back again.

Reviewed September 6, 2013

On a rainy day down the shore, its sometimes hard to find things to do. We spent 1.5 hours marveling at the assortment of planes that they had in this small hanger. very educational

“Great museum...”
Reviewed September 4, 2013

I'm a serious aviation nut and went there (came all the way over from the UK!) to fly on the Collings Foundation's B17 and B24 over the Labor Day weekend. It's just a great place to hang out and I even got to sit in the cockpit of a T33. Great place for kids young and old and I congratulate the people running it for providing such a fun place to visit.

“So interesting and informative!”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

Went for the WWII aircraft. Hubby a big WWII buff. Also, his uncle flew a B-17. Our 7 year old daughter was probably as fascinated as her daddy. There was so much to see. The staff was very friendly. We also went through the Vietnam Museum there. She was so interested that she was willing to out off her Build-A-Bear trip to be able to see EVERYTHING that was there.
