Owner description: Naval Air Station Wildwood Foundation is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to restore Hangar #1 at the Cape May Airport, Cape May County, New Jersey, into an aircraft museum honoring the Navy airmen who died while training during World War II. Hangar # 1 was listed onto the National Register of Historic Places in September of 1997. Naval Air station (NAS) Wildwood was commissioned on April 1, 1943. The site served as an active dive-bomber squadron training facility from 1943 to 1945. Aircraft stationed at NAS Wildwood included TBM Avengers, Douglas Dauntlesses, Vought Corsairs and Curtiss Helldivers. Forty-two airmen perished while training at NAS Wildwood during World War II. In June 1997, NASW Foundation purchased Hangar #1 at the Cape May Airport. The 92,000 square-foot all-wooden structure was in a state of disrepair and required extensive renovation. Under the stewardship of NASW Foundation, the hangar was listed on the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places at the National Significance Level. NAS Wildwood Aviation Museum now boasts over 26 aircraft displays as well as exhibits of military memorabilia, engines, photographs and more. Additionally, the Franklin Institute of Philadelphia has provided NAS Wildwood with a wealth of interactive exhibits that allow visitors to discover the science of flight. The museum also features a library, food vending area as well as a recently expanded gift shop. In its role as a community resource, NAS Wildwood Aviation Museum regularly hosts activities including fly-ins, aviation festivals, big band concerts, swing dances, veterans’ ceremonies, historical lectures, school field trips and senior tours.

A lot of history in one hangar. A lot to see. Very interesting and educational. Admission seemed high for an unguided tour.

Thank you for visiting Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum during your stay in Cape May. We apologize but we were not aware of your desire to have a guided tour, which are available by request for larger groups at a discounted rate. We have a group of dedicated and knowledgeable volunteers who enjoy providing our guest this service. Since we operate as a small non-profit foundation with limited paid staff, the museum is set-up for our guests to explore at their own pace. Most exhibits have signage to provide detailed information along with many hands on activities and videos to further explain aircraft, engines and the historical relevance of items including the hangar itself. Again, we thank you for visiting and your positive review.

“Fantastic Display of Historic Aircraft!”
Reviewed September 30, 2012

Originally a WW2 flight training school/airport, the hangars have been transformed into a large military aviation museum. Here you can see and appreciate historic aircraft of many different types. On many dates they host special "fly ins" where it is common to see WW2 aircraft like B17,& B24's flying in for shows and events. Check the calender. This is a must see attraction good for all ages and it keeps improving every year.
Just outside the museum is also a small brewery that you can visit and sample different types of beers.

“NASW - Anchored in the past but modern in its view”
Reviewed September 14, 2012

Although I've visited this museum many times over the years, each visit reveals either a new aircraft or a new exhibit. The collection has grown dramatically since the museum began and all contained in a landmark status WWII hanger. The enthusiasm of the staff shows the museum to be a "labor of love" for them. There are very few museums where you can get up close to the aircraft, artifacts and exhibits.

“Great place to visit”
Reviewed September 8, 2012

Naval Air Station Wildwood is a great place to visit for people of any age. It's historic, it's educational, it honors a generation of heroes some of whom gave their all for their love of this country.
Children of all ages like being able to climb into some of the aircraft on display, and everyone gets to learn something they didn't know about life and training of Naval Aviators and Cape May County during World War II.
NASW is constantly adding to and upgrading it's inventory to modern times to bring the best possible experience to it's visitors. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and always available for questions.

“As good as it gets!!!!!!!!!!!!”
Reviewed September 7, 2012

Nas Wildwood is a wonderful experience.
You can even touch the airplanes.
Considering how small a museum it is, they have a large collection of aircraft.
The musuem director always replies in a most friendly way.
I highly recommend it.
