Avondale by the Sea

This was the first time we ever stayed in Cape May and we will return to Avondale by the Sea. The location was perfect - walking distance to the restaurant and shopping area and the ocean view from the third floor balcony was amazing. The staff was friendly and the room was immaculate.

Room Tip: Get a third floor room for the best ocean view.

An older and typical shore property with a great location on the Cape May beach. A central location within walking distance of many restaurants and the shopping mall. The facility is older but well kept. Recently installed tile flooring is a negative but improved TV and Internet are positives. Three floors but no elevator, outside access for all rooms. Housekeeping staff does a great job.

Room Tip: Lower number rooms have best view; room layouts vary, we prefer the two beds away from the wall a/c...

My family has been staying at the Avondale every beach vacation for the past five years. One year we booked late and they didnt have any vacancies, so they referred us to another hotel. But we will always come back to the Avondale. Charlie and his staff are extremely friendly and greet you with a smile. I, myself, can sit and talk to Charlie for hours. The one thing that really sticks out about the Avondale is the cleanliness of the pool. You can spot Charlie out there every morning making sure the pool is clean.
Last, but certainly not least, is the location. It sits in a prime location, with 90% of fan favorite things to do within walking distance. The Washington street mall is a five minute walk, and that is allowing time to stop and watch the dolphins.

Due to personal circumstances, this vacation was very important to the wife and I. The nice thing about Avondale and Charlie and Barbara is that they get it. They make improvements every year and they don't just run in place as we've seen other lodgings described here. However, they are not adverse in admitting mistakes and then correcting them - it's great when people take responsibility and then corrective action. For example, a few years ago, they installed all new air conditioners in the room. Problem - the controls were too high off the ground for many people. They came up with a solution - and this year the room came with a remote control for the A/C - elegant solution. It is this sort of attention that we truly appreciate.

Our housekeeper Nikki is just so personable and professional that we consider her to be part of our total vacation experience and we appreciate her efforts to no end. Alex is terrific in the front office and everyone there truly wants to make your stay enjoyable and go above and beyond for that to happen.

Avondale may not be everyone's cup of tea ....just forces the wife and I to drink more tea.

Room Tip: King Suite balconies provide the best view due to the building's architecture.

This is the cleanest hotel I have ever stayed at in my 40+ years of traveling for both business and pleasure. Everything went great from check in to check out. Great location! Walk to just about everything - beach, dining and shops. We were in Cape May for the World Series of Birding, which is an annual event held nearby. Next year we will definitely stay at Avondale by the Sea.

I spent two nights at the Avondale by the Sea - one planned and the other one after checking out from an Atlantic City Hotel - unplanned. The owner and the staff were very friendly, caring and communicative - but this was off season; so maybe there was more time as in summer. All rooms have ocean view, but not every room has a private balcony (rooms on the right side of the building have private balconys). There is no elevator so one have to carry the lugggage. I had a large room with two queens and a refrigerator, which was clean and quiet (remember: off season...) - in the summer it could be maybe noisy from the Ocean Drive. Breakfast is american standard I would say. The hotel is centrally located to the beaches and to a lot of great restaurants - and Cape May is really a gem. I like to say thanks to Charlie and his staff - I loved to stay at the Avondale and I would definitely return.

Just here last weekend for a couple days of R & R. This hotel is right across the street from the promenade/beach, a very short walk to the Washington Mall, and easy to find with off-street parking. We found our breezeway room to be immaculate. I read about the cold tiled floors and took slippers with me, but the floors were not an issue. I'd rather walk on clean tiles than a carpet that gets cleaned once/season........... The beds were comfy, the A/C was semi-noisy but didn't keep us up, and the hotel in general was quiet. The owners were very friendly and helpful and we told them we'd be back ! There is a free continental breakfast - very basic - both mornings they had 4 cereals, bagels, donuts, coffee, tea, 2 juices and bananas. I would have liked more fruit options, perhaps some muffins, but it was sufficient. I thought the price of our room was also reasonable. We don't spend a lot of time in a room when at the shore, so I didn't miss any other amenities that could have been offered. We got a clean, quiet, convenient and reasonable place to spend a couple days. Every room has 2 rockers and a table outside, and even from our "corner" room, we had a delightful view of the ocean.

Room Tip: 1st floor rooms are at parking lot level - go to 2nd or 3rd floors for better view and less congesti...
