My daughter and I have been to many B&Bs in Cape May, but this is our favorite. Renee, who books the reservations, is responsive and nice. Unlike most, our host does not greet you with a list of things you should not or may not do-- he invites you to enjoy the place as your home while you're their guest. And he means it! He remembers us between visits and greets us by name. The sitting rooms are large and comfy, not cluttered. The staff is pleasant and efficient, but they do not hover or stand guard. Breakfast is less fancy than some B&B's, but it's very good and there's plenty of it. We usually get the Queen Suite with the separate TV/sitting room and bundle on the divan after dinner. The big indoor pool was the thing that drew us at first (and it's a blast, especially in mid-winter!), but this is our place now. We're interested in ease and hospitality, not just Lincrusta wainscoting and Salamander fabrics. Here, we relax. My daughter just reminded me-- they let you "steal" food from the kitchen if you miss tea time. We have our next stay booked already.

We have come to expect from Bed and Breakfast's a certain hospitality which just wasn't evident at the Wilbraham Mansion. The Mansion itself is an appealing Victorian home with nice period pieces throughout the first floor and is nicely decorated. It is conveniently located with on-site parking. However, there was no smiling proprietor to greet us when we arrived or departed, no Kleenex in our room, the alarm clock didn't work, snack foods (including egg salad sandwiches and milk) were left out overnight, hot water for tea/coffee wasn't hot causing us to forage through the kitchen to use the microwave (hope that was okay with them), and the torn lampshade touching the light bulb scared us a bit. Crikey!

Our first encounter with a warm body who was not a guest occured at our first breakfast at the "Mansion". There was the quiet woman preparing the food and silently serving it (think Nancy Walker in "Murder by Death") who appeared to be angry with the sloppy-looking man (Dan Ackroyd) who came in during breakfast, introduced himself, and proceeded to not assist said woman. We thought the proprietors were on the outs with each other. We later learned (by reading the emergency call list at the pool) that neither of these people were the proprietors but merely employees. Where were the proprietors? We don't know because we never met them.

We had always assumed that B&B's were the owners' homes as well as their business, providing the cozy and inviting atmosphere that defines the difference between hotels and B&Bs. Silly us! We'll be sure to ask that vital question in the future.

My fiance and I stayed at the Wilbraham mansion in January. We have frequented many B&B's and have never encountered such rude, inconsiderate treatment.

We had the feeling that we were bothering the help anytime we asked for something extra. The rooms were mediocre and over-priced. We also had an encounter with one of the inn-keepers who had her back to us when we first entered the premises. The woman was eating food in the kitchen and did not even bother to look in our direction.

Breakfast was one time, 9am. The woman serving, did not even bother to say "good morning" let alone make conversation with the guests. Breakfast consisted of pancakes, juice and coffee.

We left early and received hostile treatment by the inn-keepers. The over-all look of this B&B is pretty, but the staff's attitudes were repugnant. I would not recommend this bed and breakfast at all. It was truly a disappointing experience.

We stayed for two nights during the week. This was our second time here, the first our honeymoon in 2005. The place looked even more beautiful than last year, and the delicious breakfast that we remembered from our first stay has been expanded to include even more great tasting food!

We arrived to a newly painted building surrounded by lovely flowers and shrubs. The very large parlors and dining rooms were even more impressive than we remembered, and the proprietor pointed out that new common area rugs were installed, some furniture was reupholstered, and some additional antiques were acquired (antiques lovers will be impressed with the furniture throughout). Our room and linens (my pet peeve) were very clean and the room exquisitely decorated (as is the entire mansion). AND THE POOL!! It's located at the back of the house in a room with stained glass that leads to an open back porch ... it's large and the water temperature warm, and it was very relaxing to take a night swim our first night before retiring and then an afternoon swim the next day in between eating our tasty "tea" treats while it was raining outside.

We liked that we were allowed to arrive for check-in at 1:00 (in prior years other places in Cape May had later check-in times). The weather was beautiful on our arrival date so we were able to walk to the beach and spend time there for a few hours without feeling rushed to get back to get ready for dinner.

The proprietor, Doug, is a very warm & friendly fellow who knows how to be entertaining and helpful without being intrusive. We will definitely be staying at the Wilbraham again!

Just got back from a weekend stay. This B&B receives a 2/3 rating out of 5. Being that we've stayed at B&B's previously, our standards have been set already. That said, there were other guests we spoke with who loved the Wilbraham Mansion.

We arrived at 4pm & found an envelope with key & instructions. Our room was an average size, but lacked much furniture and the antique touches that make for an authentic experience. The bathroom was accomodating, but the stall shower was not very appealing. It was a inserted plastic prefabricated shower with a crooked door, that you had to pull pretty hard get shut. Also, their was about a 1 - 1 1/2 inch gap below the doors, which I did not like, because you got all the hallway noise.

The indoor heated pool was the reason we chose this B&B. It was a great temperature, warm, but still refreshing. We used it everyday, even for a cool dip after a hot day at the beach.

In the morning, breakfast was only one sitting, at 9am. So if you missed it, you'd have to go out to get something to eat. It was not anything fancy.. fruit, muffins, scrambled eggs. The young girl bringing out the food didn't even say good morning to anyone.

The worst thing about this B&B, was that there was never anyone around to greet you, see how your stay was, ask if you needed anything. Twice I had to go seeking out someone (in the morning of course), so that I could pay my balance, and to ask for an ironing board. Even when we did locate someone we didn't feel as though we were treated with the B&B attention that should come with the price tag.

My girlfriend and I spent two lovely nights at the Wilbraham awhile ago. We enjoyed the B&B immensely. The room was quaint and nicely decorated as was the rest of the house. We picked the Wilbraham because of the indoor pool, which we used frequently. I would recommend it to anyone. particularly anyone who is in a romantic mood. Be careful of Cape May it always draws you back to learn how to live and love again. Just ask my soulmate.

sincerely,
Hoping for HOPE

Just got back from an extended weekend stay. This was our first stay in a B&B. The Mansion very was nice as was our room. The indoor heated pool was the thing that made us choose this B&B. However, the pool was too cold. It was heated but not as much as it should have been. Also, breakfast was nothing special. Everything was good, but simple.(muffins, pancakes, scrambled eggs...etc) Breakfast was served on two large dinning tables. Sharing the tables was fun in that we were able to easily chat with the other guests about the previous days experiences.
