“Would stay again.”
Reviewed July 17, 2007

This was our first stay at the Marquis. Here's what we found -
PROS:
1. Availability. We decided to go at the last minute & they had a room, which no one else did. They also did not impose a 3 or 4 night minimum like so many other Cape May hotels.
2. Location. One of the best in Cape May. You can easily walk to anywhere & the ocean views are great.
3. Staff. Courteous, friendly & helpful. The best staff I have ever encountered in Cape May.
4. The Pool. Heated, nice pool bar (no blaring music), poolside wait service & a towel guy. You can use their towels at the beach.
5. The Breakfast Buffet. It's included with the room & offers a big hot and cold selection.
6. Pet Friendly Rooms: Available on the first floor. We didn't bring our dogs but it was fun having some around.
7. Nice Victorian decor.

CONS:
1. Room & bathroom (especially the bathroom) on the smallish side. Room needs more electrical outlets.
2. Parts of the building are quite old & although they have been updated over the years, there are places that would benefit from new sheetrock, carpet and highhat lights. It is not a dump, but it needs freshening. This bothered me at first, but I enjoyed the PROS so much that I would go back.

We booked using Hotels.com and were treated poorly for doing so. The staff stated "oh you booked with Hotels.com",not us!
We had asked for a King/Queen size bed since it was just my wife and I for a romantic weekend and when we got to the room we found 2 doubles. We asked to be switched and were told "we don't guarantee anything". I assume it was because we used Hotels.com and I know the hotel was not fully booked. We also found out that they had a free breakfast for guests but we were told we didn't get that either since we used Hotels.com. It's not like we paid less for the room we had because we found that they had a coupon that offered the same room as ours with the breakfast for less than we paid with Hotels.com.
The only access to the upper floors was by elevator and half the time it didn't work or took forever. There were no access to the stairs by key card making it hard to get back to our room. The outside bar was extremely noisy and could be heard form the room.

Online booking channels are wonderful tools for consumers and businesses alike. As a hotel, using these channels gives us the ability to market our product and provide these companies rates based on supply and demand. You can expect to receive the highest discounts during off-peak seasons when inventory is more available. To provide these lower rates, while maximizing our room sales, it may be necessary to eliminate “perks” and/or options. In our case, the breakfast and seasonal beach tag reimbursement are not included.

Online booking channels make their money by margining the rates we provide them and passing this on to customers. Don't let this one experience deter you from continuing to book online, however to be a savvy Internet consumer it is always wise to check directly with the hotel for availability and highest discounts. Having this information will allow you to find the best deal.

It is highly recommended that you also read the booking agreement before proceeding with the reservation transaction. There, you will find the cancellation policies and that bed types may not be guaranteed—amongst other important information. Kings beds are our number one request and are the first bed style to sell out. It is our policy to make every reasonable attempt to meet the requests of our guests if the request is available.

After reading all the incredibly mixed reviews, I too , wonder if all the people are staying at the same place. Our experience with this hotel was a pleasant one. We showed up at the hotel in the middle of high season to look it over and see if we might want to stay there. The staff was VERY accomodating, letting us into several rooms that had already been cleaned and whose occupants had checked out. These rooms were actually not available, as new guests were checking in that day. But the staff let us look at them anyway, to get an idea of the different types of accomodations at the hotel., They took us to every different type of room, from pet friendly ground floor to upper floor suites. They did so with a smile and were very helpful. We are very picky travelers when it comes to room cleanliness and upkeep. We have stayed in 5-star hotels all over the US and Europe. This is not a 5 star hotel; however, we did note to our pleasure that the rooms had all been recently updated and upgraded, inlcuding the kitchenettes and baths. They were all very clean. And the HouseKeeping Manager who was showing us the rooms explained to us that the ground floor rooms (the pet-friendly ones) receive cleaning with a special cleaning substance to help remove any pet odors that might linger (we did not smell anything) The balconies were lovely, not huge, but quite adequate, and much larger than one usually finds in oceanview rooms in Cape May County. As far as the "noise" is concerned...DUH!! The hotel is located on the main thoroughfare of Cape May, which also happens to be the only area in the city of Cape May where one will find oceanfront accomodations in close proximity to restaurants and shops. If one wants the convenience of being steps from the beach, and within walking distance of great restaurants and shops, then one has to realize that there will be noise if we are talking about Cape May. If complete peace and quiet is desired, the accomodations several blocks back from the ocean are the where one will find that....lovely B&'B's and very quiet. A few reviewers have noted the room inventories and "theft paranoia" of the staff.....the Marquise is not a hotel. All the units, as well as the common areas, are individually owned, and a management company provides rental services for the owners. We know this because we have looked into purchasing a unit, but have not done so. Perhaps this is the reason that management resorts to "heavy-handedness" when attempting to keep theft to a minimum.

We are compelled to write this review, because as long-time tripadvisor members, we are beginning to find that the site is becoming very unhelpful when attempting to find good accomodations. This is not the first time we have encountered the problem of finding WILDLY conflicting reviews on the same property, properties at which we ourselves have stayed. With so many ridiculously conflicting opinions, it is not worth even coming to this site any longer for help in choosing an accomodation......Is there anyway to remedy this situation?

went with the family a few times and it was just okay. The rooms were nothing special just a room. It wasen't the cleanest place that i've stayed at. It was defiantly not in the best location. I would not highly recommend it to teenagers for spring break or families that want to bring their pets.

We stayed a week in the Grand Marquis suite. The hotel is right on the beach with every room having a balcony facing the ocean. It is very convenient to most of the attractions, restaurants, and shops in Cape May. The serivce was friendly and polite. The rooms were very well kept and were very comfortable. Having the pool with the adjacent bar was especially nice for those days we didn't feel like going down on the beach. Parking was adequate. It was also a very quiet place in which we felt we had a lot of privacy. It was nice that the hotel reimbursed us for our beach tags for the week when we checked out. It was reasonably priced. Overall it was a great place to stay.

  • Liked — Location and attached pool
  • Disliked — Front desk staff was unfriendly and unhelpful.
  • Tips/Secrets — The Grand Marquis suite is worth the extra money.

I was a little nervous about staying here after reading some of the reviews, but I was pleasantly surprised I did not experience any of the problems written about. The hotel is in a great location! We walked almost everywhere. The beach was across the street and washington square shopping was only a few short blocks away. The staff was very pleasant, from the pool staff to the cleaning staff -everyone was extremely nice. It was great to have a parking attendant to assist in parking and with our bags. The pool was a good size and we especially loved the poolside bar/restaurant service. The breakfast was very good - especially for a buffet. The rooms were nicely decorated and clean. Loved having a balcony face the ocean, eventhough it was a bit small. I wished the rooms were bigger. The photos on the website make the room seem much larger. We stayed in the cape may suite - 3 single women and 1 young child. I woudnt recommend more than 4 people in this type of room , which i think might be the biggest. there was really no dining table and the refrigerator was small. Liked the 2 TVs and plenty of towels..
All in all if the kitchen was larger and the room had a dining area, I think it would be perfect. I would definately stay there again. I liked having the extra services for a relatively affordable hotel.

I have stayed at many places in Cape May. This was by far the worst.

As noted in an earlier review, this place is very unfriendly. They are the exact opposite of what a hotel should be.

Yes, the location is great. Center of town, across from the beach. That, unfortunately, is the only positive that I found.

Negatives:

Ants in the bathroom. Every day my fiance and I found ants in the bathroom.

Completely rude at every level. From Management to Front Desk Staff. They could not have been worse if they tried.

Small bathrooms.

Musty Room.

Spider Webs all over the place.

Everything they say sounds good on paper, but it is not put into practice.

I cannot advise you any more to stay in another place. I have been going to the Cape for years now and this has been my worst experience to date.

I have no reason to lie, they already got my money. I just don't want anyone to experience what I did.

Here's a test to see if I am telling the truth. Check in time is at 4 pm. Call up and ask if you can possibly check in at 3:30 if a room is available. Gauge their response. That will tell you all you need to know.

I am sure 'Management' will post a rebuttal. Truthfully, I like that they do that. Shows they care. But honestly, those are just words and actions speak louder. Everything sounds great until an ant is crawling on you in the bathroom!

But that is not the biggest deal. The real problem is their demeanor. Rude, flippant, and un-courteous.

Don't make my mistake. Stay at the Mainstay Inn instead.
