“Good & Bad (off season)”
Reviewed April 23, 2012

Great Location across from the beach & with nice balconies & rockers. The hotel lobby is kind of cool in that it's old-fashioned & calming. Serviceable room on second floor ("Victorian" with 2 double beds that are ok, but not great). Love the new wicker-styled furniture, but the bed sheets seemed old. Bathroom is small but has nice shampoos & soaps. Did NOT like that a woman was selling jewelry in the lobby as we walked in, even though she was very nice & had nice wares. Did NOT want to eat in the restaurant even though we were given coupons because it just didn't look very appealing. Did NOT like the noisy air conditioner? that runs constantly outside all the rooms ~ would rather hear the ocean waves while visiting the shore (especially off-season). We booked on-line through the hotel website using the "Manager's Special" of $130. but with taxes it cost about $148. Guess it was ok for one night.

We encourage our customers to let us know if there is anything we can do during their stay to make each night more comfortable and can usually correct any issues a guest may find unsuitable. Unfortunately we did not get the opportunity to help you during this visit. We hope you will give us another opportunity to make a better impression.

The hotel is in a perfect location - park your car and forget about driving. Right across from your balcony is the beautiful beach and ocean. Walk to tons of restaurants and shopping. We had a suite - a small suite with a bedroom, living room and small efficiency kitchen. It would be tight for a week with family. Upon check in the rude woman at the desk could not find our reservation and was fine with telling me they just didn't have a reservation. I pre-paid through their website and gave her the confirmation. It took her 15 minutes to call a manager and it took the manager 15 minutes to find the reservation. 30 minutes wasted with no apology. Unacceptable.

We do acknowledge that this Expedia reservation was not in our system. To avoid a double booking every attempt was made to ensure it wasn't under a different listing. We regret that this oversight had occurred and the customer was upgraded from a standard room to a suite on a higher floor at no additional charge.

The room was mostly clean. The first day we noticed that the floor really had not been vacuumed.Day 2 it was cleaned. The bathroom was clean. The bath products were good. Only 1 cofee filter a day is kind of chintzy. Even though we reserved a room for 3 we only got 2 Bath towels. The Guide to Cape May in the binder in the room was from 2010...

The bed was comfortable. The pillows so-so.
The walls were a little on the thin side or my neighbor's tv had surround sound one or the other. The balcony view of the ocean is top notch.

I liked that the room did not smell mildewy which does happen in some seaside places where the rugs never quite dry out. I liked the strict no smoking policy. This hotel has some Pet Friendly rooms so if you have allergies you best make sure you don't get one of those.

Didn't eat at the place in the hotel. My wife and I both thought that the front desk lady who checked us in seemed a little gruff. We booked on line...and the room choice we chose had the option of both double beds and a king. We had a party of 3 so we expected 2 doubles.
Instead we were placed in a room with a King.....off season in a hotel with many vacant rooms.
I just think the room selection for us was very poor by the staff. My wife didn't want me to say anything because she got a bad vibe from the front desk. She rarely says negative things about people.

The hotel gym is tiny but serviceable. 1 home gym cable machine. 1 treadmill, 1 eliptical. 1 exerbike. No water. no towels...just a tv. At least the window opened for fresh sea air.

Room Tip: Maintainence staff was very quick and responsive to a problem we had with the room.

Your first instinct to speak to someone about the issues you described was a correct one. A manager is always available to hear your concerns. Our objective is to get it right the first time, but if something isn't up to our guests' expectations we do try to make it right. We hope to prove that to you on your next visit.

We stayed the last weekend in March 2012 its not busy. Lot of shops and restaurants aren't open year round. The hotel restaurant had good chicken fingers and shrimp basket we ate outside our room in our rockers. The hotel is nicely located right across the beach. Havibg our princess doggy with us limited us on dining out. We ordered pizza/wings from Tony's good choice they provided plates without being requested excellent service and the food was good (see pictures). PROS: 1. Oceanview really nice walk across the street to the beach. 2. Nearby shops 3. Clean 4. A/C worked good 5. King bed was okay 5 Maintenance was fast and friendly CONS: 1. Make sure to bring $100 CASH deposit for pet 2. Toilet paper holder was cheap it came right out of the wall 2. Low water pressure in shower 3 loud at night might have been near an ice machine 4 hard to park. 5. We were going to spend another night Sunday but when i called Sat night to get a rate i was told ask us Sunday when you're abiut to check out and we will let you know our best rate that was too ahady for me we opt'd to leave i like to be told uo front the rate!

Thank you for your comments. We are happy to know that maintenance was able to provide you with quick service. Unfortunately, due to water conservation requirements in Cape May the performance of our bathroom fixtures may not always be satisfactory to our guests. We are always on the look-out for new technology in this regard to make the experience more pleasurable. Regarding your request to extend, rates are available upon request and should have been provided to you without hesitation. We will speak to the front desk staff regarding your experience to ensure there is no confusion in the future.

We stayed at the Marquis last summer for the 4th time in a row (and the last). We had always liked the place and had previously very good experiences with it. We stayed in one of the top floor suites, but the floor was in disrepair (Pergo-laminate type flooring that had a corner of it sticking up in a trip-hazard, stitches-in-your-foot kind of way that was cleverly covered with an area rug so "we wouldn't see it"). When we alerted the desk to it, we were made to change rooms, to one on the same floor but this one had 2 double beds instead of the king bed we had requested. Really? Sorry, don't want to spend my vacation time with my husband in two double beds (the kids slept in the front room on a sofa bed). No one helped us change rooms, we had to get our own luggage cart and do it. 2 days later, we moved back into the original room (again, had to move it all ourselves, no help offered). The amount of stuff we had with us + 2 kids for 7 nights stay was considerable, so this was quite inconvenient. every day this was going on, we called the front desk, asking for some compensation for this inconvenience, (especially since I believe they tried to get this bad flooring past us) and was told it would be addressed by "Louise". No so much. Took a screaming match in the lobby at check-out to get a certificate for one night's stay (it takes a lot to get me worked up, but this was ridiculous!). Yeah, I don't want to go BACK, I wanted something REFUNDED. So, we are not going back, still have the certificate, will give to a friend or something. We are headed to Cape May again this summer, but not to the Marquis. VERY POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE! They alienated a repeat customer, hard to do!

Room Tip: The 6th floor is nice, 608 is the end unit, great views but they won't guarantee a specific room...

We remember this situation quite vividly. The wood floor had buckled creating an unsafe situation and trip hazard in the penthouse suite. Although the customer requested to stay in the room we had to insist that, for the safety of the occupants, they be moved to another unit. The high occupancy of the hotel at the time did not allow us to place the family in another suite with a king bed and two double beds with living room was the only option unless they wished to go on a lower floor. We do regret that this inconvenience had occurred but it was unavoidable. Assistance to move their luggage was offered but was declined. The floor was repaired and made available if the guests wished to move back, which they did. Everything was done to ensure the safety and comfort of the guests that night. The Manager on Duty (Louise) reported the incident to the day-time management who picked up where she had left off. Refunds / compensation are taken under consideration only by the General Manager once the stay has been completed. We regret that this policy conflicted with the guests expectations.

We made a off season visit to one of our favorite shore places,Cape May but since it was really off season our usual hotels were not open so we decided to visit the.Lafayette. In reality it was a pleasant visit, and the accomodations did nothing to detract but little to add. The best point was the balcony and the view. Staying in the 3 floor annex we had a private balcony with panels on both sides and wonderful view. The ocean can take credit for that view as well. The room had excellent cleanliness especially for an older room. The room was on the small side but in reality at the beach you don't spend much time there. The room had a microwave and mini frig which was great but in reality if those amenities are provided a small table (not just a desk) could be provided as well. The furniture was just okay and wicker, and in reality in need of replacement someday soon. Flat screen TV was good. My biggest problem was the wireless signal. In reality people go on vacation to "get away" but in reality with today's technology filled society there seems to be a need to stay connected. Staying connected wirelessly was impossible form my room, and even when I followed the hotels' guidelines to go to the fifth floor lobby to connect, the signal strength was weak (only one bar) and unpredictable with lack of consistent connectivity. I have experienced connectivity issues in other Cape May hotels but not this weak. If the hotel markets wireless then there must be something that can be done to make it more effective and useable. We had free breakfast , usually a buffet but since there were few guests we had main entree ordered off the menu. I though the breakfasts were just okay but my wife thought that the free cost was definitely overcharging.. The fruit was the only item that was acceptable.Even with free breakfasts, discounts and off season rates, the cost was a little high but in reality you will be hard pressed to get a rate bargain with any type of ocean view anywhere in Cape May. Service was fine, but nothing extraordinary and we had no complaints voiced to the staff, and our one request was handled effectively. We may not go back again, but experienced nothing that should keep others away.

Thank you for your comments. The wireless system was recently installed throughout the hotel. Once more access point is being installed on the first floor to correct a weak signal in that area. We apologize for the inconvenience. We appreciate your candor and hope you will consider staying with us again.

We usually stay in a bed and breakfast, but decided to give the new penthouse/cathedral suites at the Marquis a try. Under new management (local, and who actually give a darn) the central oceanfront location can't be beat. Don't be put off by the "published rate" for this hotel, you will get a minimum of 20% off, probably a lot more. This puts the penthouse in the same bracket as a B and B.

From our 6th floor balcony we could see from Convention Hall to the lighthouse! A little bigger than the regular suites, the penthouses have bigger balconies, high cathedral ceilings, finer finishes (hardwood, travertine, stainless, granite), new heating/cooling (quiet and efficient), flat screen tvs/dvd with great sound, fast wifi, great cell reception, comfy bed with nice linens. Higher number penthouses and suites have better views, lower number ones are missing a bedroom window, but have an entrance in the interior of the hotel (so you don't have to go outside again after you get off the elevator).

Why does this hotel get such mixed reviews? We were lucky enough to have a tour showing us several types of rooms and we see why. The suites have all been recently upgraded and seemed very nice. The ones with the interior entrances are darker, as some people complained. The single room we saw in the three story building was awaiting its turn for upgrading, and did have minor cosmetic issues. But all rooms and suites have full front ocean views, and at least a coffeemaker/refrig/microwave, tub/shower, and were clean and fully functional. Suites and penthouses have full kitchenettes. First floor is pet friendly.

We could see from our balcony if our favorite table at Martini Beach was available on the glassed-in porch, could see from our entryway if there was an outside line at the Merion Inn, and from the 6th floor lounge if there were rocking chairs open on Aleathea's porch. 24 hour desk service sent up a battery in minutes for our dead remote at 11 at night. Elevators, luggage caddies, pool, laundry, restaurant, bar, are all things we didn't get at a bed and breakfast. All this with onsite parking right across from the beach! What more could you want?

Room Tip: 608 has the best view

Thank you for recognizing that the reviews are not always an indication of what you can expect at the Marquis de Lafayette Hotel. The staff does a great job keeping up with the demands and challenges they are confronted with every day. Unfortunately, few of the majority of people with positive comments publish their opinions than the minority who published negative ones. Thank you again. Your comments are appreciated!
