We recently returned from a weekend in Cape May. This was our first experience at Cape May or at the Jersey shore. The Carroll Villa Hotel/B&B was large with many rooms. We were in room #8, which was small, but comfortable. We choose this room, partly because it was available when we booked and the price was right ($165/night, versus some other rooms that were $225 to $250). We had our own small private bath in our room which was also a plus. My husband loved it and I never thought a B&B would be something he would really enjoy. It wasn't 'frilly or foofy' as my husband would say, but a little victorian and nicely decorate with antiques.
We did notice that a few of the rooms that didn't have private baths IN the room, but instead private baths else where on the floor. The website advertised the baths as 'at the end of the hall', but room #5 was at the complete opposite end of the hall from its associated bathroom. Needless to say, I'm glad we didn't choose one of these rooms.
Overall, the B&B was very nice. The staff was friendly and helpful. Our favorite part was that the Mad Batter Restaurant is in the same building. We had a great breakfast both mornings of our stay and unlike other B&Bs, we didn't have to be up and ready for breakfast at a particular time. It gave us nice flexibility in our schedule and the ability to sleep in! We could have used our $15/pp for breakfast 'coupons' for lunch, if we had ventured elsewhere for breakfast. Again, nice flexibility, great food. The Mad Batter also serves dinner and has a beautiful bar with 1/2 price happy hour, with drinks that were already reasonably priced. I think we spent $23 for 5 drinks during happy hour. It was very nice and relaxing.
We would stay at this B&B again and recommend it to friends. The only B&B type thing it was missing was a front porch to sit on, since the Mad Batter Restaurant is partly located on the porch. They also allow children over 8 years old and we definitely had some early rising children in the room down the hall. They weren't overly loud, but they were kids and kids tend to not walk quietly down hallways. Overall, it was a great experience.
