Couldn't get a Saturday night reservation anywhere in Montclair, so we tried Mes Reves and got one with no problem. Therein lies part of its charm: it's as good as probably 70 percent of the restaurants in Montclair, but because it's in neighboring Bloomfield, you can actually get in. And park on the street.
The staff is great. The portions are more than ample, including the escargot, which in many other restaurants is meted out like hospital Advil. The room is fairly noisy, so that's good or bad depending on your tastes. The food is ambitious, and I found my sauteed skate a little heavy; it could have used a few more tomatoes to leaven the taste. But all in all a very pleasant experience, and I'm pleased to see Bloomfield having its own nascent restaurant scene. Give it a try!
